Airstream Builds Land Yacht for Landlubbers

Land Yacht exterior

?

At first glance, it looks like any ol' Airstream?silver bullet?on wheels. But inside, this 28-foot trailer boasts a one-off, nautically themed interior that makes us want to leave our earthly?possessions?behind and hit the open road.

?

Land Yacht exterior

?

This "Land Yacht" concept was executed in collaboration with Italian cabinet makers Tecnoform and the Officina Italiana Design studios, executed in partnership with Riva Yachts designer Mauro Micheli. And it shows; from the high luster teak and white wood inlay boat deck-style flooring to LED panel lighting, Corian countertop surfaces, and ultraleather seating areas, this five-sleeper trailer seems perfectly in step with Airstream's original 1930 design, which was penned by engineer and designer Hawley Bowlus, who was also responsible for Charles Lindbergh's transatlantic airplane, the Spirit of St. Louis.

?

Custom Airstreams have become a status symbol of sorts among the rich and famous, and their bling has the capacity to sully the original intent of these iconic trailers. But pared down design purity as seen in this one-off certainly makes a compelling case for itself, and makes retro enthusiasts pine for a more elegantly styled, slower paced era.

The Hoyle State: A Primordial Nucleus behind the Elements of Life

Using supercomputers and new mathematical techniques, physicists are working to reveal how the Hoyle state atomic nucleus gives rise to the light elements that enable life, and how it drives the evolution of stars

hoyle state, Sir Fred Hoyle, physics, primordial nucleus, elements of life, astrophysics, triple alpha process, primordial nuclear state, JUGENE supercomputer The Hoyle state is produced through a ?triple alpha process? inside stars. Two alpha particles fuse to form a beryllium atom, and then a third alpha quickly fuses with it, creating the Hoyle state. This primordial nuclear state marks the starting point for most of the elements necessary for life. Image: Illustration: Courtesy of Forschungszentrum J?lich GmbH

From Simons Science News (find original story here)

Billions of years ago, all of Earth?s carbon erupted into existence inside distant, dying stars. At first, each atom?s nucleus?arose in?a swollen, squashed state with little chance of survival. For every 2,500 that immediately fizzled, only?one shape-shifted into a stable form capable of supporting life.

That primordial, unstable nuclear state, called the Hoyle state, was discovered more than 50 years ago, but it has taken the rise of modern supercomputers and the development of new mathematical techniques to figure out just how the laws of physics cook it up. In work first detailed in May 2011 and further refined in a paper to be published this month in Physical Review Letters, a group of theoretical physicists in Germany and the United States applied the forces of physics to a computer-simulated set of subatomic particles to build the structure of the Hoyle state nucleus from scratch.

?It looks like a bent arm,? said Dean Lee, a professor of nuclear and particle physics at North Carolina State University and a study co-author.

Physicists say knowing the structure of the Hoyle state will help reveal how it gives rise to carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and other light elements that compose the complex molecules of living things. The synthesis of these elements enables the genesis of life, but it also drives the evolution of stars.

?The carbon-oxygen-nitrogen cycle is simply crucial for the formation of almost all the other elements, and for understanding how stars live and how stars decay and fade away,? said Morten Hjorth-Jensen, a professor of theoretical nuclear physics at the University of Oslo and Michigan State University, who was not involved in the research. ?And, of course, without the Hoyle state we wouldn?t be here.?

The quest to unravel the Hoyle state started in 1954 with what the astrophysics writer Marcus Chown has called ?the most outrageous prediction? ever made in science. The theoretical astrophysicist Fred Hoyle reasoned that his own existence meant that an unknown, exotic state of the carbon atom with about 7.65 million electron volts of extra energy must arise inside dying stars, even though no one had ever detected spectral emissions from such an atom.

?Hoyle postulated that this 7.65 MeV carbon had to exist in order for there to be life,? Hjorth-Jensen said. ?Then, four or five years later, an experimental group in Caltech actually found this Hoyle state in emissions.?

Just as predicted, almost all the key elements of life descend from that fleeting form of carbon. When midsize stars like our sun run low on hydrogen to fuse into helium, their outer layers expand and redden, and their cores shrink. During this inner contraction, helium nuclei (also called alpha particles), each containing two protons and two neutrons, are thrust together so forcefully that they fuse, forming a four-proton, four-neutron atomic nucleus called beryllium-8. In the ten-thousandth of a trillionth of a second before the beryllium decays back into two alpha particles, a third alpha particle sometimes smacks into the beryllium, fusing with it to form an excited, plus-size carbon-12 nucleus: the Hoyle state. In addition to carbon?s usual six protons and six neutrons, this state packs an extra bundle of energy.

UK hospital divulges Kate's condition in radio hoax

LONDON (Reuters) - The London hospital treating Prince William's pregnant wife Kate for severe morning sickness admitted on Wednesday it had fallen for a prank call from an Australian radio station, relaying personal details about her condition.

Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, was admitted to the King Edward VII Hospital in central London on Monday suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum, very acute morning sickness which causes severe nausea and vomiting.

News of her pregnancy and her hospitalization has generated a worldwide media frenzy with journalists excitedly reporting any update on her condition along with the facial expressions of William when he arrives and departs.

However, two presenters from the Australian 2Day radio station managed to go one step further after calling the hospital pretending to be William's grandmother Queen Elizabeth and his father, the heir-to-the throne Prince Charles.

Despite putting on unconvincing impressions of the royal duo, they were put through to the ward where Kate is being treated and given intimate details about how she was faring.

"She is sleeping at the moment and she has had an uneventful night," a flustered-sounding nurse told the presenters, who called in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

"Sleep is good for her. She's been given some fluids to rehydrate her because she was quite dehydrated when she came in. But she's stable at the moment."

The nurse tells the duo that they would be welcome to come and visit after 9 a.m. when Kate has been "freshened up".

"She hasn't had any retching with me since I've been on duty and she has been sleeping on and off. I think it's difficult sleeping in a strange bed as well."

The hospital confirmed the hoax call had been made and it deeply regretted the incident. It added that there was no way such a call would have been put through to a patient.

"This was a foolish prank call that we all deplore," John Lofthouse, the hospital's chief executive said in a statement. "We take patient confidentiality extremely seriously and we are now reviewing our telephone protocols."

The prince's office said it would not be commenting on the prank call.

The birth of new cardiac cells: Where new heart cells come from

ScienceDaily (Dec. 5, 2012) ? Recent research has shown that there are new cells that develop in the heart, but how these cardiac cells are born and how frequently they are generated remains unclear. In new research from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), researchers use a novel method to identify these new heart cells and describe their origins.

This research is published in Nature on December 5, 2012.

A sophisticated imaging system (MIMS) demonstrates cell division in the adult mammalian heart.

"The question about how often cardiac cells are born has been extremely difficult to answer because there was a need for new techniques to help us understand this process. We are especially excited about our findings because of the novel way in which were able to show new heart cells, using Multi-isotope Imaging Mass Spectrometry (MIMS). Our collaborator, Claude Lechene, MD, had developed this technology, and as a team we harnessed this for the cardiac regeneration question." said Richard T. Lee, MD, a physician and researcher in the Cardiovascular Division at BWH and senior author of the paper. "These data present one piece of the puzzle when it comes to the discussion around the generation of new cardiac cells."

The team of BWH researchers marked existing cardiac cells genetically to cause them to express a green fluorescent protein. Then they used Multi-isotope Imaging Mass Spectrometry (MIMS) to examine the development of new heart muscle cells, called cardiomyocytes, in a pre clinical model over a period of months. Researchers were surprised to find that new heart muscle cells primarily arose from existing heart muscle cells, rather than stem cells. Even in the setting of a heart attack, when stem cells are thought to be activated, most new heart cells were born from pre-existing heart cells.

"Our data show that adult cardiomyocytes are primarily responsible for the generation of new cardiomyocytes and that as we age, we lose some capacity to form new heart cells," said Dr. Lee. "This means that we are losing our potential to rebuild the heart in the latter half of life, just when most heart disease hits us. If we can unravel why this occurs, we may be able to unleash some heart regeneration potential."

How to Create an Innovation Ecosystem - Harvard Business Review

When we talk about innovation, we often focus on individuals. Take the endless fascination with Steve Jobs as an innovative leader, or our innate tendency to attribute a discovery to a single inventor. In business, we generally identify good innovators and nurture their ability to generate creative practical solutions to new problems. There is less focus on the kinds of structures that promote a culture of innovation.

At the IC2 Institute at the University of Texas, we have been exploring the ecosystem of innovation using the Austin Technology Incubator (ATI) as a model. While traditional incubators focus on providing inexpensive space and business advice for new companies, ATI, under director Isaac Barchas, helps early-stage technology companies to get their first round of funding.

The program functions a lot like a coral reef for start-ups. In the ocean, a reef provides a structure that protects fish, provides food, and creates an arena for marine plants and animals to live and thrive. Likewise, ATI brings together new companies, experienced business leaders, faculty researchers, government officials, established technology companies, and investors. This environment provides those new companies with a wealth of technical expertise, business experience, and access to capital that supports innovation in the early stages of growth.

Many large organizations innovate in a different way. They often have internal experts on idea generation or external consultants who work with groups to generate ideas. At that point, existing business units within the company take on the task of pushing a new idea forward until it can be brought to market.

If your organization relies heavily on individual innovation, consider creating your own innovation reef, where creative problem-solving experts develop a network of individuals skilled in bringing new ideas to market. There are three essential elements to creating this in your company:

Get the right people involved. The innovation network has to include upper-level management that can fund projects, leaders who have had success with past innovations, technical experts, and external consultants.

Cultivate the network. This extended group should have opportunities to mix together in productive ways. Hold regular meetings, events, and talks where innovators from across an organization can get together and share their experience. Lead innovators need to meet regularly with a variety of groups within a company that are working on innovative projects to help connect together groups that are undergoing similar problems.

Educate others. In order for best innovation practices to diffuse through an organization, it is important to develop those ideas before projects begin. The innovation network should implement a company-wide education program on how to develop good ideas and how to transform good ideas into actionable plans to bring those ideas to market. These lessons should be delivered both to the future leaders within the company (which many companies do well) as well as broadly to the rank-and-file who will ultimately play a significant role in innovation success (which fewer companies do well).

A core aim of an innovation reef is that the innovation network within a company is responsible for creating a structure that promotes innovation, but need not govern the innovation outcomes. The positive element of creating a broad innovation ecosystem is that groups involved in innovative projects will reach out to each other directly to solve problems rather than requiring a central office to mediate all communications. This loosely-coupled structure helps to create a culture of innovation, rather than top-down governance, allowing innovative ideas to not only be formed ? but also thrive and grow.
