Looking back on the Week 16 NFL schedule, here are five things that stood out from my perspective?starting with Russell Wilson?s production in the win over the 49ers.

1. Russell Wilson on the prime time stage: If you were watching Wilson play Sunday night vs. the 49ers, then you saw the ability he brings to the Seattle offense. Sure, the Read Option adds to the playbook and it is tough to prep for when Marshawn Lynch is also in the backfield. However, I?m more focused on the rookie?s ability to navigate the pocket, get to the edge of the defense and make the tough throws. Focus on the deep out, the 7 (corner) route in the end zone, etc. Can we put him in the discussion for the Rookie of the Year award? Sure we can after Wilson and the Seahawks dropped 40-plus on one of the best defenses in the NFL.

2. Ponder, Vikings beat up the Texans: I had no problem saying the Texans could win this matchup if they limited the explosive gains from Adrian Peterson (25-86) and put the game plan in Christian Ponder's hands. Well, that didn?t happen because the Vikings? QB played some good football and the Minnesota defense shut the door on Houston. Ponder made plays with his feet, escaped pressure, protected the ball and did enough in the passing game (16-30-174-1TD) to put the Vikings in a position to get a win on the road vs. a quality defensive team. And now all Minnesota needs is a win at home next week vs. the Packers to punch a ticket to the playoffs.

3. Roethlisberger?s 4th quarter INT: This is the type of play we are accustomed to seeing the Steelers? QB execute. Extend the pocket, allow the WRs time to convert their routes and make the stick throw to continue the drive. However, with the Bengals playing Cover 2, Roethlisberger sailed a ball intended for Mike Wallace and Bengals safety Reggie Nelson was waiting in the deep half for a classic ?basket? interception. That play helped set up Cincinnati for the game winning FG and it also knocked the Steelers out of the playoff mix. Think about it: that?s now two straight games where Roethlisberger has thrown an INT in a crucial situation.

4. Giants continue to slide: Look at the last two weeks for the Giants. That tells you the story here. Inconsistent play on the offensive side of the ball, a lack of production from Eli Manning and a defense that is getting lit up. This Ravens? team came into Sunday under a lot of heat, but Joe Flacco, Ray Rice and the rest of the offense put up over 500-total yards of offense vs. the Giants. The New York defense isn?t getting the big plays up front along the D-Line and that is exposing the secondary outside of the numbers. Tom Coughlin?s club needs some help to get back to the post season if they want to defend the title.

5. Falcons? play calling: On Saturday night, Matt Ryan and the Falcons played every bit like a pro offense during their win over the Lions to lock up the No.1 seed in the NFC. The run game, the screen passes, the multiple personnel groupings and the vertical shots down the field to WRs Roddy White and Julio Jones. This is a tough offense to stop when Atlanta opens up the game plan and goes to work. And when you mix play calling, use balance and highlight some real talent at the skill positions, you are going to score points.

LONDON (AP) ? Tens of thousands of people have signed a petition calling for British CNN host Piers Morgan to be deported from the U.S. over his gun control views.

Morgan has taken an aggressive stand for tighter U.S. gun laws in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut, school shooting. Last week, he called a gun advocate appearing on his "Piers Morgan Tonight" show an "unbelievably stupid man."

Now, gun rights activists are fighting back. A petition created Dec. 21 on the White House e-petition website by a user in Texas accuses Morgan of engaging in a "hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution" by targeting the Second Amendment. It demands he be deported immediately for "exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens."

The petition has already hit the 25,000 signature threshold to get a White House response. By Monday, it had 31,813 signatures.

Morgan seemed unfazed ? and even amused ? by the movement.

In a series of Twitter messages, he alternately urged his followers to sign the petition and in response to one article about the petition said "bring it on" as he appeared to track the petition's progress.

"If I do get deported from America for wanting fewer gun murders, are there any other countries that will have me?" he wrote.

Big movies will be wrapped up and delivered this Christmas. The long-awaited big-screen version of "Les Miserables" features such stars as Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman and Amanda Seyfried. Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" tells the story of a slave (Jamie Foxx) who teams up with a white bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) in a bloody attempt to find and free Django's wife. And if you prefer to sit at home and not fight the snow or cinema crowds, you can tune in to the new "United States of Bacon," celebrating the uber-trendy meat.

TUESDAY: 'Les Miserables'
Do you hear the people sing? Have you dreamed a dream in times gone by? Are you the master of the house, keeper of the zoo? Then line up now for "Les Miserables," the big-screen version of the hit Broadway musical. So much has already been heard about it -- Anne Hathaway, who's skinny on a regular day, lost even more weight to play the doomed Fantine. Russell Crowe, not exactly thought of as a stage singer (despite years in his own band) joins Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne and others belting out the catchy tunes. Stealing the show, however, are Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter as the thieving?Thenardier inkeepers. Even if a musical doesn't sound like your thing, "Les Mis" will haunt your thoughts for days after you see it. (Opens Dec. 25.)

TUESDAY: 'Django Unchained'
It's a Quentin Tarantino film, so you know what to expect from "Django Unchained." Witty dialogue. Big stars. And blood falling like rain. If in the wake of the Newtown shootings you don't have the taste for violence -- including brandings, heat torture and dozens of bloody shootings -- you'd do well to see something else. Jamie Foxx plays Django, a slave who teams up with a white bounty hunter (the amazing Christoph Waltz) in hopes of finding and freeing his wife (Kerry Washington) who's been sold away. Leonardo DiCaprio shines as a creepy plantation owner, and Samuel L. Jackson is equally disturbing as a house slave who's devoted to his master, with little regard for the other slaves. (Opens Dec. 25.)

SUNDAY: 'United States of Bacon'
How is Guy Fieri not involved in this? A new series called "United States of Bacon" will send chef Todd Fisher across the country in search of the best bacon-filled dishes. No, really. There's bacon-wrapped meatloaf, bacon on pizza, a triple-decker BLT and even a bacon happy hour. Twelve episodes are planned, because if there's one thing we won't run out of in this country, it's ingenious ways to use bad-for-you good-tasting food. E pluribus bacon! (Dec. 30, 10 p.m., Destination America)

Gabon Agriculture - 15 Percent of GDP By 2020 - African Business ...

In an interview with This is Africa, Gabon?s agriculture minister explains how the government is developing its cash crop sector through international investment.

Gabon aims to increase the contribution of agriculture to its economy to 15 percent, from current levels of 1 percent by 2020, as part of its strategy to become an emerging country by 2025, according to the country?s agriculture minister.

The West African nation is looking to develop its cash crop sector, with the aim of creating domestic food security and exporting into regional and international markets, Julien Nkoghe Bekale tells This is Africa.

?We want to develop intensive agriculture next to subsistence agriculture. We are going to develop agro-industry and cash crops: palm oil, sugar, rubber, coffee and cocoa, maize and soya, with the objective of reducing our food imports by 2020,? he says.

Gabon imports the majority of its food, spending 250bn CFA ($504m) annually on goods from Asia, South America, the USA and Europe, but it wants to cut that figure by a factor of four by 2020.

The country?s population is small ? around 1.5 million ? meaning it should be able to service its domestic market relatively easily, before looking to build on its limited current exports of rubber and palm oil, the minister argues: ?Initially we will be looking at the home market, but then the sub-regional market, because we are very well aware that we have a tiny market. The aim after that is to export internationally.?

Production has been boosted by Olam International, which is investing heavily in cash crops in the sparsely populated country. The Singapore-based company has entered an $800m public private partnership with the Gabonese government to develop 50,000 ha for palm oil production. It is also developing rubber plantations and ammonia and urea manufacturing facilities for the production of agricultural fertilisers. Belgium?s SIAT has also invested in rubber and palm oil production since it took over a set of state owned enterprises in 2004.

Buoyed by those inflows, Gabon aims to produce 250,000 t/y of palm oil by 2020, up from current levels of 50,000 t/y.

Courting investors

The development of the agriculture sector is aimed to diversify Gabon?s economy, which is heavily reliant on oil. The country is Africa?s fifth biggest oil producer and hydrocarbons accounted for around 52 percent of GDP in 2011. With structural reforms ? including privatisation ? on track, the government is keen to promote further foreign direct investment in the agriculture sector.

?We have the potential to move from a mining and oil-based economy to becoming an agricultural economy,? Mr Bekale says. ?We have the land available; we have an attractive business environment; so we have all of the means available to develop sustainable agriculture, modern agriculture, and competitive agriculture.?

Gabon has 1m ha of land available for immediate arable use. ?There are also tax breaks; there?s a very good tax regime; and there is security in land acquisition, you can lease land from 25-85 years,? the minister outlines.

Weak labour force

Gabon?s small population means that, unlike other African countries, it lacks agricultural workers, and is therefore less preoccupied with smallholder-led production.

?The government?s objective is to provide food security and to do that we need to increase production, which must happen by encouraging the development of intensive agriculture and cash crops,? he says.

?We have a weak labour force in terms of the number of workers available for agricultural labour. We are top heavy; we have well trained people right at the top but we don?t have agricultural workers or technicians.?

As part of broader education initiative, the country is developing agricultural colleges. ?Our ambition is to create a class of agriculture entrepreneurs, to make the farmers into businessmen,? the minister explains.

The Olam palm oil project will have a significant impact on employment, he says: ?A project like Olam is already having positive effects on employment, society and on growth. We expect 7,000-14,000 jobs created from that project.?

Analysis: GOP policies led to fiscal cliff blowup

WASHINGTON (AP) ? House Republicans seem shocked by their party's meltdown on the so-called fiscal cliff. They shouldn't be.

The uncompromising conservatives who blocked Speaker John Boehner's tax bill were merely sticking to policies that Boehner and nearly all other GOP leaders have pushed, without reservation, for years: It's always wrong to raise tax rates on anyone, no matter how rich. The nation's big deficit is entirely "a spending problem, not a revenue problem." And in any deficit-reduction plan, spending cuts must overwhelm new revenues, by 10-to-1 if not more.

To be surprised by Boehner's failure is to assume one of two things. Either House conservatives didn't really believe their party's bedrock principles; or they would compromise after seeing President Barack Obama win re-election on a deficit-reduction plan that called for higher taxes on the wealthy.

Neither was true. And now the Republican Party is reeling from unbending fealty to its core principles.

Congress' structure makes compromise essential, and the nation once lionized the 19th century senator and congressman Henry Clay as "the Great Compromiser." But the modern Republican Party is heavily energized by the tea party movement, which sees compromise as a triumph of flabby pragmatism over courageous conviction.

All these threads weaved themselves into a knot late Thursday that strangled Boehner's bid to position his party behind a tiny concession on tax hikes. Whereas Obama campaigned to raise tax rates on couples making more than $250,000 ? a threshold he offered to raise in postelection negotiations ? Boehner asked his House Republican colleagues to accept higher rates only on millionaires.

When an undisclosed number refused, Boehner had to abruptly send Congress home for the holidays and face reporters asking if he will lose his speakership.

"We had a number of our members who just really didn't want to be perceived as having raised taxes," even on millionaires, Boehner explained Friday.

And with good reason, many would say. The Republican establishment has long embraced activist Grover Norquist's drive to persuade nearly every GOP lawmaker to pledge never to raise taxes on anyone, no matter how big the gap between federal revenue and spending.

Even though conservative heroes such as President Ronald Reagan raised taxes at times, the anti-tax pledge became the Republican Party's "brand," as Norquist often said.

Norquist on Wednesday said Boehner's proposed tax on millionaires would not technically violate the pledge. But it was too late, or too little, for many House Republicans.

"We made a pledge not to let taxes go up," said Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas. Barton entered Congress 24 years before the tea party's birth, proof that unyielding tax aversion runs deep.

Such intransigence in the face of a narrowly divided U.S. electorate dismays Republicans who say compromise can be vital to a party's survival.

The collapse of Boehner's tax effort "weakens the entire Republican Party," said Rep. Steve LaTourette, R-Ohio, who is retiring after 18 years.

"It's the continuing dumbing down of the Republican Party," he said, "and we are going to be seen more and more as a bunch of extremists that can't even get a majority of our own people to support policies that we're putting forward. If you're not a governing majority, you're not going to be a majority very long."

Republican consultant and writer Craig Shirley told The Washington Post: "The national GOP is now simply a collection of warring tribal factions."

Republicans point to their success in maintaining control of the House, now assured for 16 of 20 years since 1994.

It's also true, however, that Democrats this year won more House votes nationwide than Republicans did. And Republicans have lost the popular vote in five of the last six presidential elections.

For some time, signs have indicated the Republican Party is shifting away from majority public opinion on key issues. They include taxes and spending.

Despite Republican leaders' insistence that the deficit be tackled with spending cuts alone, and no new taxes, a recent Pew Research Center poll found a different public view. The vast majority of Americans say the deficit should be addressed with a mix of tax increases and spending cuts in major programs.

Few prominent Republicans protested when Mitt Romney, the eventual presidential nominee, joined his primary opponents in saying he would reject a deficit-reduction plan even if it raised $1 in new revenue for every $10 in spending cuts. Some conservative writers said the GOP should exult in so lop-sided a deal.

But Romney's acquiescence contributed to the view that modern Republican leaders are well to the right of their predecessors, not to mention most American voters. In June, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said his father, former President George H.W. Bush, and Reagan would have a hard time being nominated by today's Republican activists.

Scores, if not hundreds, of House members focus more intensely on their home district's politics than on their national party's reputation. Many Republicans from staunchly conservative districts fear a primary election challenge from someone to their right.

Obama said this week he realizes that many House Republicans "come from districts that I lost. And so sometimes they may not see an incentive in cooperating with me, in part because they're more concerned about challenges from a tea party candidate, or challenges from the right."

Obama has his own problems with unbending liberals who want to protect Social Security, Medicare and other social programs from virtually any cuts. Obama's positions have varied, but he clearly signaled in his 2011 "grand bargain" talks with Boehner that he was willing to slow those programs' growth as part of a deficit-reduction, tax-increase deal.

It's still possible that Obama, Boehner and Congress can reach a deal to avert the "fiscal cliff" before the Jan. 1 deadline. For now, however, the House Republicans' internal warfare makes it easier for opponents to paint them as extremists, unworthy of serious negotiations.

"The president and Congress have no obligation to radical Republicans who have no ground to stand on," said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.

It's doubtful that any congressional Republicans see themselves as radicals. Polls nonetheless show that key GOP policies are drifting from mainstream American sentiment. The Republican establishment has yet to do much about it.
