Job Description
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and the outstations are in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

EMBL is offering a position of Laboratory Manager in the laboratory of the Head of Monterotondo outstation, Prof. Philip Avner, whose laboratory focuses on the analysis of genetic and epigenetic control mechanisms in mouse developmental biology. The following is a brief overview of the tasks of the Laboratory Manager.

Training and Supervision

  • Training of new group members and visitors in the technologies and protocols used in the laboratory including mRNA analysis, RNA, DNA and ImmunoFISH, cell culture, solftware training, etc.
  • Testing and developing of new tools, reagents and experimental protocols.

Specific Research

  • Expert support and management of ongoing scientific projects (internal and collaborative), especially in mouse biology, develomental biology, cell and molecular biology, biochemistry
  • Presentation of data at internal and external meetings
  • Literature research
  • Assistance in the preparation of manuscripts for publication

Lab Management

  • General laboratory management, including administration of reagent databases, instrument maintenance and scheduling, laboratory space organization.
  • Serve as interface between EMBL?s service sections and the Unit (maintenance, workshops, core facilities)
  • Interfacing with scientists and research technicians in the Monterotondo outstation and other parts of EMBL

Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate should have confirmed expertise and at least 5 years working experience in a related field. Moreover the ideal candidate should have independance in the use of, and teaching of the principal techniques used in developmental mouse biology, molecular biology and biochemistry, immunohistochemistry, microscopy and data analysis. (S)he should have demonstrated proficiency in coordination and organization tasks. The sucessful candidate should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enjoy working as a part of a team and be able to work under pressure. Excellent knowledge of English is required and some knowledge of Italian would be an advantage.
