U.S. stocks sag on healthcare ruling, euro dips

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Thursday after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Obama administration's healthcare overhaul law, while the euro hit a three-week low as divisions among European leaders at a meeting in Brussels further diminished hopes of urgent measures to tackle the region's debt crisis.

However, Wall Street shares and the euro staged a late bounce from session lows as traders reduced early bets on a disappointing outcome from the European Union summit, just in case the region's politicians deliver a positive surprise, traders said.

The high court upheld the centrepiece of President Barack Obama's healthcare reform law that requires most Americans to get insurance by 2014 or pay a fine. Republican leaders and other opponents who claim the law is too costly and an over-reach of government power vowed to repeal it.

U.S. healthcare sector stocks were generally weaker after the ruling, while stocks that stand to benefit from more government business rallied.

Financial shares took a beating after British bank Barclays plc paid record fines in a probe of its manipulation of interbank loan rates. A New York Times report saying U.S. bank JPMorgan's losses on recent botched trades could reach $9 billion (5.8 billion pounds) also hurt the banking sector.

Investors turned more cautious after data showed the U.S. economy is losing momentum, while Germany's unemployment rose in June, posing a risk for global growth.

Also weighing on investor sentiment was the issue of whether Obama and Congress will agree to extend tax cuts and unemployment benefits before year-end. Traders fear a failure to do so could tip the United States back into recession.

"There is an overhang from Europe and here on Capitol Hill. That's creating pessimism and pessimism brings low expectations," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank in Chicago.

Analysts said that with the market so focused on the outcome of the European summit, trade in stocks and the euro would remain choppy, driven by headlines from the meeting.

European Union leaders will ask the bloc's top four officials to develop the building blocks they have identified so far into a detailed, time-bound roadmap to a genuine economic and monetary union, draft conclusions of the EU leaders' summit showed.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble denied a report that his country could be willing to move sooner than expected to accept shared liability of euro zone debt, reinforcing the notion there would be little progress toward a crisis solution at the meeting.

This propelled yields on 10-year Spanish bonds above 7 percent and 10-year Italian debt to 6.25 percent. These are seen as unsustainable borrowing costs for the euro zone's third- and fourth-biggest economies.

A report late Thursday said euro zone officials are discussing a plan for Spain and Italy to issue covered bonds to make their debt issues more attractive and to allow the euro zone's permanent bailout fund to bid at primary auctions of the two countries.

STOCKS, EURO PARE LOSSES

Wall Street's three major stock indexes closed lower but sharply above their session lows tied to weakness in banking and healthcare shares.

In light, choppy trading, the Dow Jones industrial average closed down 24.75 points, or 0.20 percent, at 12,602.26. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index ended down 2.81 points, or 0.21 percent, at 1,329.04. The Nasdaq Composite Index finished down 25.83 points, or 0.90 percent, at 2,849.49.

The S&P healthcare index ended down 0.3 percent, less than half its earlier decline. Morgan Stanley's healthcare payor index closed 0.8 percent higher, recovering from a drop of over 1 percent shortly after the high court narrowly upheld the landmark law that requires most Americans to buy healthcare insurance.

Shares of large health insurers fell, with Wellpoint 5.2 percent lower at $65.90, while Centene Corp and Molina Healthcare, which specialize in Medicaid programs for the poor, rose 2.3 percent and 8.6 percent to $30.59 and $23.16, respectively.

JPMorgan shares slid after the New York Times, citing people briefed on the situation, reported losses from a soured credit derivative trade could be as much as $9 billion after the U.S. bank said in May it had lost $2 billion on the trade. They ended down 90 cents, or 2.4 percent, at $35.88 after hitting 34.85 earlier.

The FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European company shares ended down 0.5 percent at 995.14. The STOXX European banking index closed down 2.36 percent.

Barclays stock shed 15.5 percent at 178.65 pence after the bank agreed to pay a $453 million fine for manipulating interest rates on the London interbank market.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei index finished up 1.65 percent.

MSCI's world equity index was down 0.18 percent to 303.05, bringing its quarter-to-date decline to close to 9.1 percent.

The euro was down 0.21 percent at $1.2444 after touching $1.2405, its lowest level in more than three weeks against the dollar.

"The fact that we're not lower than we are right now is partially because investors are still hesitant to put on any major positions on the off chance that we do get some kind of a surprise from Europe," said Omer Esiner, chief market analyst at Commonwealth Foreign Exchange in Washington.

The dollar index was up 0.11 percent at 82.715 after touching its highest level in about 1-1/2 weeks.

The move to lower-risk investments fed bids for U.S. Treasuries and German Bunds. Benchmark 10-year Treasury notes were up 10/32 in price at 101-15/32 to yield 1.59 percent, down 3 basis points, while Bund futures were up 0.4 percent at 141.67.

Anxiety about slowing global growth and the outcome of the EU summit stoked selling in oil and other commodities.

Gold fell to its lowest since June 1. It last traded down 1.2 percent at $1,554.34 an ounce.

Brent crude futures in London settled down $2.14, or 2.29 percent at $91.36 a barrel, while U.S. oil futures closed down $2.52, or 3.14 percent, at $77.69 a barrel.

BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill exacerbated existing environmental problems in Louisiana marshes

BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill exacerbated existing environmental problems in Louisiana marshes

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

The BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill temporarily worsened existing manmade problems in Louisiana's salt marshes such as erosion, but there may be cause for optimism, according to a new study.

A study appearing online Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found the 2010 spill killed off salt marsh plants 15 to 30 feet from the shoreline and this plant die off resulted in a more-than-doubled rate of erosion along the marsh edge and subsequent permanent marsh habitat loss. Vegetation farther from shore was relatively untouched by the incoming oil.

"Louisiana is already losing about a football field worth of wetlands every hour, and that was before the spill," said Brian Silliman, a University of Florida biologist and lead author of the study. "When grasses die from heavy oiling, their roots, that hold the marsh sediment together, also often die. By killing grasses on the marsh shoreline, the spill pushed erosion rates on the marsh edge to more than double what they were before. Because Louisiana was already experiencing significant erosive marsh loss due to the channelization of the Mississippi, this is a big example of how multiple human stressors can have additive effects."

Marshes are the life's blood of coastal Louisiana because they act as critical nurseries for the shrimp, oysters and fish produced in these waters while helping to sequester significant amounts of carbon. They also protect coastlines from flooding and guard estuarine waters from nutrient pollution.

But the marshes have been suffering for decades as a result of the channelization of the Mississippi River, which has starved them from needed sediments to deter erosion.

Then came the oil spill.

Researchers observed minimal oil on the surfaces of grasses located more than 45 feet from the shoreline, indicating that significant amounts of oil did not move into interior marshes.

Instead, the researchers found that the tall grasses along the marsh edge acted as wall-like trap to incoming oil slicks, concentrating oil on the marsh edge. This concentration of oil on the shoreline protected interior marshes from oiling but worsened already extreme erosion on the shoreline. As oiled plants died, their roots that hold tight to the sediment perished as well. Already eroding sediment was now exposed to wave action without the effect of the gripping plant roots.

The result: elevated erosion rates for 1.5 years that averaged more than 10 feet of shoreline loss per year -- double the natural rate for this area.

The encouraging results, Silliman said, included significant declines in the oil concentration on the marsh surface over 1.5 years and that unaffected, healthy marsh plants in the marsh interior quickly grew back into marsh die-off areas that had not yet been lost due to heightened erosion.

When the new marsh plant growth grew into the erosive edge of the marsh, Silliman said, the recolonization of the area by the gripping plant roots shut down the oil-elevated erosion rates and returned them to those seen at marsh sites where oil coverage did not occur.

The researchers also found that polyaromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, a carcinogenic byproduct of oil, was 100 percent greater at the Barateria Bay testing site than in reference marshes. This finding provides chemical evidence to support their visual observations that marshes in the affected areas were laden with oil while those in reference areas did not receive significant oiling.

By adding Biochar, a charcoal-based substance, to marshlands, Silliman's team is also using new bioremediation tactics to try to break down PAHs into organic material. If this method is successful, he said, it could be used to supplement naturally occurring microbes in the marsh mud that already oxidize the oil carcinogen. The team is soon to publish those findings.

"This is a new idea applied toward cleaning up PAHs," said UF chemistry professor Andrew R. Zimmerman, a co-author on the paper. "It's possible there's a bunch lurking at the bottom of the bay."

A Room of One's Own: How to Be More Creative @ Shirley Hershey ...

a clean well-lighted space

It?s Wednesday, June, 27, 2012. 8 a.m.

Time to go to the office.

Oh wait, I am at the office! I have finally arrived at a place I have fantasized about ? a room of my own for writing ? and freedom from the 9-5 job world. Much as I loved having a career, I often coveted the life I imagined writers to have. ?Now is the first time in my life that I get to see how the fantasy matches up with the reality.

Will words come?

In her famous extended essay on creativity and the woman writer, ?A Room of One?s Own,? Virginia Woolf asserted that until women have had enough money (500 pounds) and space (a room with a lock on the door), over a long enough time (one hundred years), they would not be able to produce great literature to match their male peers. The dominant literary genre of her time was the novel, and her focus was on the woman novelist.

Woolf herself, ironically, had in fact inherited 500 pounds a year, and, presumably, she had a room of her own. She wrote beautifully yet walked into the River Ouse with a large stone in her pocket. She struggled with her demons as long as she could in order to become a mother to other women writers. She herself said it best:

?A woman writing thinks back through her mothers.??Virginia Woolf (Tweet Me)

The Anxiety of Influence

Woolf wrote to decry the absence of mothering in the literary tradition, an insight likely heightened by the fact that her biological mother died when she was just thirteen years old. She knew the feeling of being a motherless child, just one of the psychological burdens of the writer.

Harold Bloom, speaking about the male literary tradition, named another burden: the anxiety of influence.

Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar challenged Bloom?s oedipal theory for its male orientation and renamed it to fit what they saw as the universal dilemma of the woman writer, still struggling for legitimacy within the tradition. They named their theory the anxiety of authorship.

Does it help a woman writer that she knows these things as she gazes out her window?

a wondow to memory and mountains

Not really.

Writers will always feel anxiety. If they feel motherless, they are lonely. If they have mothers as magnificent as Virginia Woolf, they feel intimidated.

So what?s a writer to do?

Get in the chair and write!

Many of us crave the conditions ideal for writing. Then, when they arrive, we fear that we don?t deserve them or lack the gifts to take full advantage of them. It seems the Fates can get us any way we turn.

So let?s not turn, shall we? In the space below, please share one idea that helps inspire you to action rather than paralysis, whether you are a writer, a parent, another kind of artist, or just an ordinary human being trying to live a creative life. We want to know your secrets!

Spain requests bank aid, Moody's downgrades banks

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain formally requested a European bank rescue on Monday but lack of details kept investors fretting and Moody's cut the ratings of most Spanish lenders, citing the government's reduced ability to support them and the likelihood of higher property losses.

In a letter to Eurogroup Chairman Jean-Claude Juncker sent early on Monday, Spanish Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said he wanted to take up the EU offer of up to 100 billion euros ($125 billion) and hoped to finalize the package by July 9.

He did not specify how much money Spain will seek to recapitalize the indebted lenders and said the final amount and conditions of the assistance were still under discussion.

Ahead of reports of the Moody's downgrade, Spanish banking stocks <.iban.bc> closed down 4.9 percent on Monday, underperforming the blue-chips index <.ibex>, which fell 3.7 percent. Spain's country risk, as measured by the spread between German and Spanish benchmark bonds, rose to around 518 basis points.

Moody's downgraded the ratings of 28 of 33 rated banks, by one to four notches, following a cut to Spain's sovereign rating to just above junk status earlier this month.

"The reduced creditworthiness of the Spanish sovereign...affects the government's ability to support the banks," the credit rating agency said in a statement.

"The banks' exposures to commercial real estate will likely cause higher losses, which might increase the likelihood that these banks will require external support."

The downgrade included Spain's largest two lenders, Santander and BBVA and left the long-term debt of Bankia , which requested a bailout last month, at junk status.

Moody's said it would assess the impact of the euro zone recapitalization on banks' creditworthiness and bondholders once details on funds to individual banks were known.

Economy Minister De Guindos said an independent audit of the banking sector released last Thursday would be used as a starting point to determine the capital needs, to which an additional security buffer will be added.

The audit showed Spanish banks, badly hit by a property crash four years ago, need up to 62 billion euros to weather a severe economic downturn.

Analysts say the euro zone's fourth largest economy, which has become the focus of the debt crisis, will struggle to get out of recession unless the banking problems are solved.

According to financial and government sources, four nationalized banks - Bankia, CatalunyaCaixa, NovaGalicia and Banco de Valencia - will get the bulk of the aid. These banks could need a cash injection of around 40 billion euros as soon as July, the sources said.

The bailout mechanism - European Stability Mechanism or European Financial Stability facility - which will be used to raise the money will be chosen at a later stage.

This choice is important because the ESM has a preferred debtor status which would push private bondholders down the queue for repayment of their investments.

NO LOSSES FOR BONDHOLDERS

Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, who chairs monthly meetings of euro zone finance ministers, said he had received the request and would give an answer "in due course".

"We expect to give a mandate to the Commission, in liaison with the ECB and the EBA, to negotiate the necessary policy conditionality for the financial sector, including restructuring plans in accordance with EU state aid rules, which shall accompany the financial assistance," he said in a statement.

The European Commission usually requires banks which receive aid to sell assets, close branches and restructure.

This would, however, not involve imposing losses on banks' bondholders, something De Guindos ruled out on Friday.

Secretary of State for Economy Fernando Jimenez Latorre said on Monday the aid should reach the banks within three or four months and that transitory liquidity mechanisms would be used for the entities which require a lifeline earlier.

"In the next weeks, we will clear doubts about the seniority of the European aid, the conditions for the credits, the maturity, if it will affect the deficit," he said.

He added that the possibility of channeling the European aid directly to the banks was still an option. The request letter, however, said Spain's bank restructuring fund, known as the FROB, would receive the money and distribute it to the lenders.

DIRECT AID?

Documents released on Friday after the independent audit showed Spain will carry out yet another stress test of its banks by October with a focus on seven lenders that might not need aid right away but could still be vulnerable.

Doing the extra test gives Spain at least two more months to negotiate for direct recapitalization of the banks. The government wants to avoid taking on the aid itself and then channeling it to the banks, which would affect the public debt, potentially ramping up borrowing costs and dragging it further into the debt crisis.

Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said on Monday that Spain would insist on having long maturities and low interest rates on the loans. He also said direct European aid for the banks was still an option.

Spain has escaped conditionality for its economic policy in return for the financial assistance but it will be placed under increased scrutiny from its EU partners.

"The way Spain complies with any and all of its commitments will be looked at with more attention than for a country which has not sought financial assistance," said EU competition chief Joaquin Almunia on Monday.

Almunia will be in charge of supervising the restructuring of the banking sector and maintaining a level playing field with other lenders in Europe which did not receive state aid.

Flavored Water: Cucumber Lemongrass and Blackberry Ginger ...

There?s something rustic and romantic about a cool pitcher of water adorning a summer picnic table and the ice cubes rattling about the glass jug. ?There is also something relaxing about drinking those fruit and vegetable flavored waters on a spa visit that seems so?luxurious. ?Thanks to Denise, now I can have both, at home. -Maggie

During the cold winter months, I drink tons of hot tea.? After my two cups of coffee that I allow myself during the morning, I switch over to grassy green teas or calming herbal blends. ?It?s guaranteed if you walk into my office on a blistery day there will be a cup of tea sitting on my desk.

Now that things are warming up, however, I am searching for alternatives to replace that misty hot cup.? We are not soda drinkers, we feel that there is just too much sugar involved.? And we normally don?t keep juice around the house, unless we are squeezing it ourselves.? So, I have been playing with the elixir of life: ?water.

Any given day the past month, if you walked into our house, you would have seen a big pitcher of sparkling water on the counter. ? A big pitcher of flavored?sparkling water, that is.? It has been great fun playing with different fruits, vegetables and even herbs to create just the right flavor combination.? Some of them work perfectly, and some don?t.? For instance, strawberries, despite what you might envision, are not my favorite floating around a pitcher of water.

Making your own flavored waters at home is quick and easy. ?An added bonus: ?a big glass of flavored water is much healthier, than say a soda, since I don?t mix in any added sugars or artificial flavorings.

It?s also an ideal kitchen project to get the kids involved.? They will love experimenting with different flavors so much that they will want to guzzle down the finished product. ?I tested this theory when we had friends over with the little ones while I was trying different flavors.? I told them mint is what is used for making gum and before I knew it they were drinking glass after glass of minty water.

I?ve definitely decided on a few of my own favorite flavor combinations. Cucumber with lemongrass ? a big glass of it makes me feel like I just walked out of the spa. ?Blackberries with lemon and ginger ? ?slightly sweet and zingy, a great pick-me-up on a hot day.? Other favorites:? watermelon and rosemary, orange and thyme, and cucumber and mint.

Cucumber Lemongrass Water

  2. Using your hands, peel away the rough outer edge of the lemongrass.? Cut the lemongrass in half, lengthwise.? Place the lemongrass onto a cutting board.? Using a rolling pin, gently smash the lemongrass.? Add to the pitcher of ice and cucumber ribbons.
  3. Fill with water. ?Give a stir.? Let chill in the fridge at least an hour.
  4. Fill about 1/4 of the pitcher with ice, stir, and enjoy.

  • 1/2 pint blackberries, washed
  • 1 knob of ginger
  • 1 small lemon
  • 4 cups of water
  • ice

Directions:

  1. Pour the blackberries into a pitcher.
  2. Wash the knob of ginger, then slice into thin slices, leaving the peel on.
  3. Slice the lemon into thin slices.? Put the ginger and lemon into the pitcher of blackberries.? Fill with water.

Egypt's Morsi: Bloodshed will not be in vain

Egypt has elected a conservative president who has said he wants to impose Islamic law. How he will change the country remains unclear. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

By NBC News and msnbc.com news services

Updated at 4:05 p.m. ET: CAIRO -? Mohammed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood-backed candidate, was declared Egypt?s first Islamist president on Sunday with 51.7 percent of last weekend's run-off vote, defeating Ahmed Shafiq, who had been tapped as prime minister by former President Hosni Mubarak.

In an address to Egyptians late Sunday night, Morsi reiterated his platform of unifying all Egyptians. Of those who died while protesting more than a year ago, he said, "Their blood will not go in vain."

Morsi becomes Egypt?s fifth president, following Mubarak, who was president for nearly 30 years before mass protests across the country forced him to resign in February 2011.

The announcement by the state election committee Sunday touched off a jubilant celebration in Cairo's Tahrir Square, where tens of thousands of Brotherhood supporters had gathered in 97-degree heat. The crowd waved national flags and chanted "Allahu Akbar!" or "God is great!"

Morsi?will be sworn in on July 1, according to the election timetable.

His victory followed?speculation about backroom deals and suspected interference by the ruling military council in determining the outcome in favor of Shafiq, Mubarak?s prime minister.

In his speech Sunday night, Morsi said that contrary to popular belief, he was grateful to the police, whom he called his "brothers and children." He said he would rely on them to maintain "security from the inside."

Supporters of Mohammed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate, protest against Egypt's military rulers in Tahrir Square on Saturday.

Morsi, who received an engineering degree from the University of Southern California in the early 1980s according to media reports, was a last-minute candidate, chosen to represent the Brotherhood after their preferred choice was disqualified.

On the campaign trail, he promised to institute Islamic law. One of his supporters, cleric Safwat el-Hegazy, issued a direct challenge to Israel, calling for a Muslim super-state across the Middle East with Jerusalem as its capital.

Morsi, 60, distanced himself from the cleric?s comments, but they trailed him on the campaign despite his assertion that he will respect international treaties, including the 1979 peace accord, on which much U.S. aid depends. He said he will not, however, meet with Israeli officials, according to the BBC.

He has also pledged to form an inclusive government to appeal to the many Egyptians, including a large Christian minority worried about potential religious rule. He has repeated that he would maintain his independence from the Brotherhood and not turn Egypt into a theocracy.

Morsi won the first round ballot in May with less than a quarter of the vote.

NBC Foreign Correspondent Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Tahrir Square.

There were some isolated scuffles in parts of Cairo between rival groups on Sunday. Several hundred Shafiq supporters in the middle-class suburb of Nasr City chanted "Save Egypt! The Brotherhood will destroy it!'' while soldiers tried to keep traffic moving.

The military council will retain control of the biggest army in the Middle East, whose closest ally is the United States.?

Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who heads the military council that has ruled Egypt for more than 16 months, congratulated the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate after his presidential election win was confirmed, state television reported.?The report, made in a brief headline, did not give further details.

Morsi "will likely face foot-dragging and perhaps outright attempts to undermine his initiatives from key institutions," Elijah Zarwan, senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said in Cairo. "Faced with such resistance, frustration may tempt him fall into the trap of attempting to throw his new weight around. This would be a mistake. His challenge is to lead a bitterly divided, fearful, and angry population toward a peaceful democratic outcome, without becoming a reviled scapegoat for continued military rule."

Egyptians fill Cairo's Tahrir Square in anticipation of a new government being announced. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Egypt's ruling armed forces were on alert on Sunday as fears of violence mounted in the final hours before the state election committee named the winner.

Sunday's result -- 500 days after the overthrow of Hosni Mubarak -- is historic for the Middle East, but will not end power struggles between the army, Islamists and others over Egypt's future.

The generals, who oversaw Mubarak's departure, have repeatedly said, both to Egyptians and to their close U.S. ally, that they will return to barracks and hand over to civilian rule. But they present themselves as guardians of Egypt's security and long-term interests and moved to block the Islamists from taking more than a share of power.

The military has held power in Egypt for nearly 60 years since the revolution to overthrow a dynasty.

Iran's Foreign Ministry congratulated Egyptians on Sunday for Morsi's victory, saying Egypt was in the final stages of an "Islamic Awakening."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu?s office released a statement saying he "appreciates the democratic process in Egypt and respects its outcome."

"Israel expects continue cooperation with the Egyptian administration on the basis of the peace accord between the two countries, which is in the interest of the two peoples and contributes to regional stability,'' the statement said.

NBC's Andrea Mitchell examines the obstacles ahead for President-elect Mohammed Morsi of Egypt.

The son of a peasant farmer, Morsi has spoken of a simple childhood in a village in the Nile Delta province of Sharqia, recalling how his mother taught him prayer and the Koran. He obtained his doctorate from the University of Southern California in 1982 after studying at Cairo University.?

Following his studies in the United States, he returned to Egypt in 1985. Two of his five children hold U.S. citizenship.?

US mulls operating out of Vietnam War era military bases to counter growing Chinese military might Report

Laos News.net Saturday 23rd June, 2012

As the administration of US President Barack Obama revamps its Asian strategy in response to China's rising army strength, the U.S. military is eyeing a return to some old bases in the South East Asian region, including those used during the Vietnam War.

In recent weeks, the Pentagon has intensified discussions with Thailand about creating a regional disaster-relief hub at an American-built airfield that housed B-52 bombers during the 1960s and 1970s, while U.S. officials said they are also interested in more naval visits to Thai ports and joint surveillance flights to monitor trade routes and military movements.

According to The Washington Post, the Pentagon is also seeking greater accommodations in the Philippines, including at the Subic Bay naval base and the former Clark Air Base, which were once the largest U.S. military installations in Asia as well as key repair and supply hubs during the Vietnam War.

Amid concerns about China's growing military power and its claims to disputed territories, Pentagon leaders have flocked to the region to speed up negotiations and fortify relations while Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines have cautiously put out the welcome mat for the Americans again, the paper said.

However, U.S. officials said they have no desire to re-occupy any of the massive Southeast Asian bases from last century, nor do they have the money to create new ones and are just looking for permission to operate from the old installations as 'guests', mostly on a temporary basis, it added.

"I don't carry around a backpack with American flags and run around the world planting them. We want to be out there partnered with nations and have a rotational presence that would allow us to build up common capabilities for common interests," Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff clarified. (ANI)

Facebook ? Employers may review unprotected profiles

A good security awareness article regarding the need to secure profile information and be careful with information that is posted.

Facebook ? Employers may review unprotected profiles
http://www.securitynewsdaily.com/2001-personal-secrets-facebook.html

QUOTE:? Whether you?re looking for a job, or already have one, there?s one thing you can be sure of: It?s not only your Facebook ?friends? who are looking at your social media profile? Those doing the hiring freely admit they search potential job candidates? Facebook profiles. If you think your current co-workers, employees or boss aren?t stopping in for an undetected peek at your profile every so often, you?re deluding yourself.???So what?? you think. ?There?s nothing on my Facebook profile that I?m ashamed of.? Are you sure? You might be surprised how much of what?s on your Facebook page is inappropriate for work.

Here are just a few of the things you?re revealing about yourself that you might not have considered.

1. Your age. Even if you didn?t use your real age when you signed up for Facebook, it?s pretty easy to figure out.

2. Your political beliefs. Anyone with a little common sense knows that talking politics at work is a bad idea, but anyone checking out your Facebook page could probably pretty easily figure out where you stand.

3. Your personal life. What?s the point of putting on a power suit for work if everyone in your office can see photos of you in your pajamas on Christmas morning on your Facebook page?

4. Your childhood. those photos your mom keeps posting of you as a kid in the bathtub are cute, too. While they?re not exactly blackmail material, there?s little doubt they?ll help undermine your efforts to command much respect around the office.

5. Your religious beliefs. What you believe is no one else?s business. But that doesn?t mean they won?t hold it against you.

6. Your work alliances. Even if you think you?re good at playing office politics, odds are your Facebook page tells the real truth about who you like and who you don?t.

LeBron James Captures NBA Finals MVP, First Championship

Following an embarrassing Decision and an abysmal 2011 NBA Finals performance, a humbled, ridiculously talented LeBron James captured his first professional championship last night, as the Miami Heat finished off the Oklahama City Thunder in five very impressive games.

The closeout was a blowout, with LeBron notching a triple double and Miami winning 121-106.

LeBron James and Dwyane Wade

"I did it the right way; I didn't short-cut anything," James said, responding to critics who have argued he did take a short-cut by joining two fellow stars on the Heat. "It's the hardest thing I've ever done."

It would be difficult to argue that James, Dwyane Wade and the Heat didn't work hard for this title. They became the first team in league history to win it all after trailing in three separate series, easily dispatching a Finals opponent who looked unstoppable leading into the matchup.

Even Cleveland Cavs owner Dan Gilbert, who positively went off on LeBron after his departure in 2010, had to send congratulations to the growing legend. Sort of.

"Great NBA season," Gilbert Tweeted last night. "Enjoyed playoffs. Congratulations to Miami & OKC for an exciting Finals. Back to work on next weeks promising Cavs draft."

HBT: Liriano has thrived since rejoining rotation

Francisco Liriano had a 9.45 ERA, .346 opponents? batting average, and 21/19 K/BB ratio in 27 innings over six starts when the Twins demoted him to the bullpen in mid-May.

He didn?t pitch particularly well in a brief stint as a reliever, but since rejoining the rotation he has a 2.67 ERA, .155 opponents? batting average, and 35/12 K/BB ratio in 30 innings over five starts.

That includes 6.2 innings of one-run ball against the Pirates last night for his fourth Quality Start in five tries after turning in zero Quality Starts before May 30.

It?s hard to imagine the Twins re-signing the impending free agent considering what a headache he?s been, in which case Liriano has another half-dozen starts to build up trade value and continue to show that his slider remains one of the best pitches in baseball.

Why Microsoft is building its own tablet computers ... - Fortune Tech

Microsoft's Surface

FORTUNE -- Having apparently concluded that Microsoft's (MSFT) new tablet computer initiative -- dubbed Surface -- is not in fact a "hoax," Daring Fireball's John Gruber took a hard look Wednesday at the company's decision to turn?against its manufacturing partners and build its own hardware.

The heart of Gruber's analysis is some math posted earlier in the day by Asymco's Horace Dediu.

Dediu calculated that the software licenses for Windows and Office generate about $78 in operating profit per PC sold. Apple (AAPL), by contrast, generates about $178 per unit operating profit just from the iPad. Microsoft used to make it up in volume, but tablet sales are on a trajectory to overtake sales of traditional PCs, which are in decline.

"So Microsoft faces a dilemma," Dediu concluded. "Their business model of expensive software on cheap hardware is not sustainable. The future is nearly free software integrated into moderately priced hardware."

That, writes Gruber, is why Microsoft has decided to compete with the manufacturers that have been its partners since the dawn of the PC era:

"This move was driven by the iPad, but competitively it directly pits Microsoft not against Apple but against Dell, HP, Toshiba, et al. The intention is obviously to slow the iPad down, but the radical shift in Microsoft's strategy is about the fight over the profits that remain after Apple's. The math no longer works out for the Windows you-sell-the-hardware-we-sell-the-software model. It works for unit share (cf. Android), but it doesn't for profit share. Nothing works sustainably in business without profit ? profit is the oxygen companies breathe.

"Even if Apple's growth soon slows, Apple already reaps a massive share of the industry's profits. And if Apple's growth doesn't slow in the next year or two, look out. All of Apple's competitors in the phone industry, save Samsung, are now starving for profit. They're dying, all of them ? HTC is breaking even and the rest are deep in the red.

"Microsoft Surface is not fundamentally about Microsoft needing to control the entire integrated product in order to compete with the iPad on design. It's about Microsoft needing to sell the whole thing to sustain its current profitability."

Its a thoughtful post. You can read it in full here.

June 20th, 2012

bigstock_Emergency_Chopper_3103686Good Neighbor Insurance, Inc provides top-notch international travel insurance benefits that include medical replacement benefits for our clients traveling outside their state / province / country.? You may view one of our best evacuation travel plans at www.onlineglobalhealthinsurance.com/global-rescue.asp that include this wonderful travel insurance benefit of medicine replacement.

Background

While on a hunting trip deep in Canada?s Yukon Territory, a Global Rescue member suffered symptoms indicative of a potentially life threatening blood clot in his leg. The member, a physician himself, contacted Global Rescue via satellite phone to request that Global Rescue deliver medication that would prevent the clot from becoming worse.

Challenges?

  • Extremely remote location?
  • Prescribing medication across borders?
  • Rough terrain and limited area for landing aircraft

Mission Summary

Global Rescue immediately put assets on alert to evacuate the member, if requested. Rotary and fixed-wing aircraft specially designed for short takeoffs and landings on improvised runways were placed on standby. The member, not wanting to interrupt his trip, requested an aerial delivery of the medication rather than an evacuation. Global Rescue facilitated telephone conferences among Global Rescue physicians, the member?s home physician, and Canadian physicians to discuss the best method of treatment.

Because regulations prevent doctors from prescribing medications across borders, Global Rescue utilized its Canadian resources to identify a doctor who could prescribe the medication locally. After filling the prescription, the medication and supplies were hand-couriered at first light via fixed-wing aircraft. The bush plane landed on a small dirt landing strip supported by a sandbar approximately 100 yards from the member?s location less than 24-hours from first contact with the member.

Outcome

Global Rescue successfully delivered critical medical supplies to a remote location. The medication was administered in the field and the potentially fatal blood clot was properly managed before it caused additional harm.

Paramount's meager slate imperils its box office crown

LOS ANGELES/NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - A year after Paramount trampled other Hollywood studios with box office hits like "Thor" and "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," the studio could fall to last place in market share this year after pushing two major projects off its 2012 slate.

"G.I. Joe: Retaliation" and "World War Z" were moved to 2013 because of reshoots and script concerns, leaving the studio with mostly welterweight titles.

"It looks very lean until the next ?Star Trek' comes out," Matthew Harrigan, an analyst at Wunderlich Securities, told TheWrap. "It's not too surprising with that ?Transformers' and Marvel product gone, but I can't remember a studio going from first to worst as quickly."

Indeed, Paramount has opened only four new movies this year with nothing outside of a Katy Perry documentary debuting until October's "Paranormal Activity 4." Its biggest success will probably end up being "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," a DreamWorks Animation film distributed by Paramount.

Thinning out its upcoming slate even further, the studio last week postponed shooting franchise hopeful "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" over script concerns.

Meanwhile, its distribution deal with Marvel Studios is over, a similar pact with DreamWorks Animation expires at the end of the year and its two biggest collaborators - J.J. Abrams and Michael Bay - can only make so many films.

No one from Paramount would comment on the record, but individuals close to the studio believe the scheduling shakeup will leave 2013 better stocked with franchise fare.

Over the next few months, however, the studio's slate is thin, and it is running low on hits developed within its walls.

"Paramount's lineup is really divided heavily between the projects that come from the outside and those that come from the inside," a producer told TheWrap. "The outside movies are fading away and the inside ones they have left are problematic. You have to question how well they will perform and if they will generate enough money to pay the enormous overhead it takes to run a studio."

It's a particularly ignominious fall from grace, given that the change in fortunes coincides with Paramount's 100th anniversary. That's probably not the centennial celebration that Paramount Chairman Brad Grey and crew had in mind, but sometimes the best laid plans go awry.

Now that "G.I. Joe" has been moved, Paramount's summer comprises "The Dictator," which has grossed a lackluster $134 million worldwide, and DreamWorks Animation's "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted," which racked up an impressive $280 million worldwide so far. The animated hit is welcome news, but Paramount only receives an 8 percent distribution fee for its efforts.

An individual close to the studio said it pushed "G.I. Joe" to refashion the film for 3D and beef up Channing Tatum's role. Screenings of the film met with a lukewarm response from audiences.

Moreover, in a crowded summer where many big budget films have bombed, the studio felt a new release date would be more hospitable.

"?Battleship' scared the crap out of them," the individual said, referencing the costly flop from Universal Pictures. In the case of "World War Z," the zombie apocalypse movie starring Brad Pitt, a problematic ending led the studio to move the Marc Forster-helmed film from December to June 2013 and hire Damon Lindelof ("Prometheus") to beef up the conclusion. That will necessitate weeks of costly reshoots on the special-effects-laden picture.

And pushing production back on "Ninja Turtles" will allow the studio to trim the budget to $125 million but nevertheless involves more schedule juggling.

Though not a wasteland, this winter does not overflow with tentpole fair or awards contenders for Paramount.

"Paranormal Activity 4" is expected to repeat the success of previous installments, and the studio is optimistic about Robert Zemeckis' "Flight," starring Denzel Washington. Come Christmas time it is betting on Tom Cruise as mystery novelist Lee Child's "Jack Reacher."

Fortunes will undoubtedly improve in May when the "Star Trek" sequel hits theater.

And the studio has prepared for the likely departure of DreamWorks Animation by launching its own animation division. "Rango," the first animated film released under the studio's banner, scored $245 million globally, although a follow-up is not expected until at least 2014.

Paramount has long emphasized profits over market share, and Wall Street likes that approach.

"A highlight at Paramount has been there haven't been a lot of big losses," Alan Gould, an analyst at Evercore Partners, told TheWrap. "They may not take as big a shot as Disney, but that means that while they don't have the upside of ?The Avengers,' they don't have the downside of ?John Carter.'"

But Paramount may be learning that filling its own slate is a big challenge.

"For so long they had other supplies like Marvel and DreamWorks that they could always count on for one or two hits. They could count on a pipeline. Now they are confronted with a place where they have to supply all their movies," one producer told TheWrap.

Some producers who work with the studio say it is more risk-averse than most.

"Everything there is a profit and loss statement," the producer told TheWrap.

In addition, other producers and financiers say it's difficult to get the attention of Paramount executives.

"It is not a system that is open to lots of outside producers and financiers and they're not interested in acquiring a lot of product," another producer told TheWrap. "They do not return your calls and they are impossible to meet with. When you turn back on everybody and turn inward, sometimes you find there's not a lot to fall back on."
