Springpad?s New Design Makes Organizing Your Life Faster, Makes Your Data More Portable

Springpad’s New Design Makes Organizing Your Life Faster, Makes Your Data More Portable Springpad is one of our favorite web-based personal assistants, and today the service unveiled a major update that offers a fresh UI, makes your notebooks and their contents more easily searchable and faster to organize, and even lets you embed your notebooks and saved items on other pages you visit more often.

Springpad 4.0 makes some basic changes that make using the service much faster: the "Spring" button is persistent at the top of the page, and your notebooks are organized on a tab at the top along with your "Springs," or the items that are inside. You can quickly search any of them to get right to the data you want, or view them in their notebooks the way you organized them. The new "Search and Do" tab uses things you've added to Springpad and the notebooks you've created to help you find new things you'd enjoy, like recipes for your Recipe Box notebook, gadgets for your Tech Wish List notebook, or nearby restaurants for your Dining Out notebook.

You can also embed those notebooks on other sites. Click "Share" from inside a notebook to post it to Facebook or Twitter, or grab the embed code to post it on your personal site or anywhere else on the web. Overall, the changes make your data easier to share, and much faster to access, which is important if you're using Springpad to stay organized. Hit the link below to see the updates in action, and to sign up for a free account if you're not already a Springpad user.

Simulations uncover obstacle to harnessing laser-driven fusion

Wednesday, March 27, 2013

A once-promising approach for using next-generation, ultra-intense lasers to help deliver commercially viable fusion energy has been brought into serious question by new experimental results and first-of-a-kind simulations of laser-plasma interaction.

Researchers at The Ohio State University are evaluating a two-stage process in which a pellet of fusion fuel is first crushed by lasers on all sides, shrinking the pellet to dozens of times its original size, followed by an ultra-intense burst of laser light to ignite a chain reaction. This two-stage approach is called Fast Ignition, and there are a few variants on the theme. In a recent paper, the Ohio State research group considered the long-discussed possibility of using a hollow cone to maintain a channel for the ultra-intense "ignitor pulse" to focus laser energy on the compressed pellet core. Drawing on both experimental results from studies at the Titan Laser at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, and massively-parallel computer simulations of the laser-target interaction performed at the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) in Columbus, Ohio, the research team found compelling evidence that the cone-guided approach to Fast Ignition has a serious flaw.

"In the history of fusion research, two-steps-forward and one-step-back stories are a common theme," said Chris Orban, Ph.D., a researcher of the High Energy Density Physics research group at Ohio State and the lead theorist on the project. "But sometimes progress is about seeing what's not going to work, just as much as it is looking forward to the next big idea."

Since the ultra-intense pulse delivers energy to the fuel through relativistic electrons accelerated by the laser interaction, the Ohio State study focused on the coupling of the laser light to electrons and the propagation of those electrons through the cone target. Rather than investigating how the interaction would work on a high-demand, high-cost facility like the National Ignition Facility (NIF), which is also based at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and one of the largest scientific operations in the world, the researchers considered experiments just across from NIF at the Titan laser, which is much smaller and easily accessible.

Despite its size and despite having lower total energy, for a brief moment the Titan laser is many thousands of times more intense than NIF, which makes it a decent stand-in as a second-stage ignitor pulse. The OSU-led experimental team focused the Titan pulse on hollow cone targets attached at the tip to copper wires and observed the burst of X-ray photons coming from the copper as a measure of the laser energy to relativistic electron conversion efficiency.

The X-ray signal was much lower from the hollow cones with thicker cone walls. "This was strong evidence to the experimental team that the typical approach to cone-guided Fast Ignition wouldn't work, since thicker cones should be more realistic than thin cones," said Orban. "This is because electrons are free to move around in a dense plasma, much like they do in a normal metal, so the thicker cone target is like a thin cone embedded in a dense plasma."

These intuitions were tested in simulations performed at OSC. Whereas earlier efforts to simulate the laser-target interaction were forced to simplify or shrink the target size in order to make the calculations more feasible, Orban used the LSP code to perform the first-ever, full-scale 2D Particle-In-Cell simulations of the entire laser-target interaction using fully realistic laser fields.

These simulations also included a sophisticated model for the pre-heating of the target from stray laser light ahead of the ultra-intense pulse developed by collaborators at the Flash Center for Computational Science at the University of Chicago.

"We were delighted to help Chris use the FLASH code to provide realistic initial conditions for his Particle-In-Cell simulations," said Don Lamb, director of the Flash Center. "This is an outstanding example of how two groups can collaborate to achieve a scientific result that neither could have achieved alone."

To conduct the simulations, the Ohio State researchers accessed OSC's flagship Oakley Cluster supercomputer system. The HP-built system features 8,300+ Intel Xeon cores and 128 NVIDIA Tesla GPUs. Oakley can achieve 88 teraflops, tech-speak for performing 88 trillion calculations per second, or, with acceleration from the NVIDIA GPUs, a total peak performance of 154 teraflops.

"The simulations pointed to the electric fields building up on the edge of the cone as the key to everything," said Orban. "The thicker the cone is, the further away the cone edge is from the laser, and as a result fewer energetic electrons are deflected forward, which is the crucial issue in making cone-guided Fast Ignition a viable approach."

With both the experiment and the simulations telling the same story, the evidence is compelling that the cone-guided route to Fast Ignition is an unlikely one. While other studies have come to similar conclusions, the group was the first to identify the plasma surrounding the cone as a severe hindrance. Thankfully, there are still many other ideas for successfully igniting the fusion pellet with current or soon-to-be-constructed laser facilities. Any future efforts to spark fusion reactions with these lasers using a two-stage fast-ignition approach must be mindful to consider the neutralizing effect of the free electrons in the dense plasma.

"We could not have completed this project without the Oakley Cluster," Orban noted. "It was the perfect combination of speed and RAM and availability for us. And thanks to the profiling I was able to do, the compute time for our production runs went from two weeks in November 2011 to three or four days as of February 2012."

"Energy and the environment is one of the primary focus areas of the center, and this research fits perfectly into that domain," said Brian Guilfoos, the client and technology support manager for OSC. "Many of our systems were designed and software packages selected to best support the type of computing required by investigators working in fields related to our focus areas."

The paper describing the study, "Coupling of high-intensity laser light to fast electrons in cone-guided fast ignition," was recently published in Physical Review E, a journal of the American Physical Society.

Five Easy Pieces of Energy Legislation

After half a decade in which the energy debate in Washington has been dominated by political posturing and produced almost no legislative action, both Democrats and Republicans who work on energy policy say they?re optimistic about prospects for a number of single-issue energy bills in this Congress.

The hope, they say, is that progress on some smaller-scale bills could restore the trust and relationships needed to build momentum for action on bigger bills.

Signs that something may be breaking loose in the energy deadlock come as members of Congress surprised even themselves last week by reaching bipartisan agreement on a stopgap budget bill absent the dramatic brinksmanship that has, until recently, dominated fiscal debate.

Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon, the new Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee chairman, told National Journal Daily?he?s optimistic that, with the bitter politics of the presidential election behind them, lawmakers are now interested in actually passing legislation.

?What?s different now?beyond the fact that elections are a renewal?is that a very significant group of senators are coming up and saying, ?We?ve just got to find a way to move ahead on energy,? ? Wyden said. ?Energy can?t just be an ongoing polarized bickerfest where everyone sits around and throws rotten fruit at each other.?

There?s a growing urgency among lawmakers to take on energy policy, in particular, since energy?where it comes from, how much it costs, how many jobs it generates?is central to the health of the economy. Also growing is the desire to address the fossil-fuel pollution that contributes to global warming.

Congress last passed a major energy law in 2007, but the provisions of that law don?t do much to address today?s most pressing issues, including high oil prices, greenhouse-gas emissions, and surging energy?demand in countries such as China and India.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has said he?d like to prioritize movement of energy bills in his chamber. And the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee has become a surprising oasis of bipartisan cooperation. Wyden and the panel?s top Republican, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, have developed what both senators call a warm, productive friendship, and the two are focused on forging bills that could gain enough support to pass the Senate with a 60-vote, filibuster-proof majority.

Wyden and Murkowski have also met in recent weeks with their House counterparts: House Energy and Commerce Chairman Fred Upton, R-Mich.; his top lieutenant on energy issues, Rep. Ed Whitfield, R-Ky.; and staff from the office of House Energy and Commerce ranking member Henry Waxman, D-Calif. Such a meeting may sound like it should be commonplace on Capitol Hill, but participants said they couldn?t recall the last time they?d been in a serious policy meeting with members of both parties and both chambers.

For the past two years, House Republicans have focused on energy chiefly as a political-messaging issue. Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., has spearheaded those efforts. Before the election, that meant moving a nonstop parade of bills focused on aggressively expanding oil drilling while handcuffing the authority of the Environmental Protection Agency. The point, at the time, wasn?t to actually pass legislation (none of the bills had any chance of success in the Senate). It was to create talking points aimed at attacking Democrats running for office?particularly President Obama.

But now that the election is over, McCarthy is taking a different tack. His office has taken pains to point out that the first two energy bills that Republicans brought to the floor this year were not typical GOP ?drill, baby, drill? measures; they were renewable energy bills. The intention, McCarthy said, was to send a message that, on this issue, Republicans are prepared to work with Democrats.

?If we lead with something else, like drilling, and were criticized, they wouldn?t listen to the rest of our energy policy,? McCarthy said. ?Let?s first enter the places that we?re more united on. You crawl before you walk and you walk before your run. If you start out and build coalitions and build trust on both sides, we can keep doing the harder bills as we grow.?

Leaders in both parties and both chambers are quick to clarify that they don?t expect to see a major energy bill anytime soon?and that even single-issue energy proposals will meet plenty of obstacles. But they pointed to these five proposals as ideas that have legs.

Energy Efficiency

The House has started a bipartisan caucus aimed at passing energy efficiency legislation?bills that would require buildings that provide the same amount of light and heat with less fuel, for example. The leaders of the caucus have serious political chops: Republican Cory Gardner of Colorado has been designated by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to serve as a point man for the GOP on energy issues. Democrat Peter Welch of Vermont is a staunch liberal with close ties to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. And in the Senate, a bipartisan bill sponsored by Democrat Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and Republican Rob Portman of Ohio is gaining traction. ?People are tired of gridlock,? Gardner told NJ Daily. ?You?re starting to see that frustration that members don?t have something to go home and show people. These energy bills are opportunities to show our constituents that we not only talk about it, we bring something home to show for it.?

Offshore Drilling

This issue is gaining traction thanks in part to the retirement of Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., former chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Bingaman did not oppose offshore drilling, but he did oppose the idea that coastal states should share a portion of the revenue generated by drilling in federal waters. The new Energy chairman, Wyden of Oregon, isn?t a big fan of offshore drilling, but he doesn?t object to proposals that send more money to coastal states. Murkowski, the panel?s ranking Republican, has introduced a bill with Democrat Mary Landrieu of Louisiana?that would expand offshore drilling, give coastal states a taste of the profit, and require some of the money to go toward development of renewable energy. The multi-pronged bill is drawing a mix of supporters?and is being taken seriously by leadership on both sides of the aisle.

Nuclear Waste Storage

This is another issue that?s gaining traction thanks to the push of local politics. The nation still has no solution for nuclear waste, which today is kept in temporary storage facilities at nuclear power plants across the country?a situation that?s viewed as dangerous and also expensive. The federal government, by law, was to have taken title to the waste in 1998, and every year that it doesn?t, it pays millions of dollars to nuclear power companies. An old proposal to build a federally run nuclear-waste dump at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, was killed by Obama and will likely remain on ice as long as Nevadan Harry Reid retains seniority in the Senate. Proposals to build an interim ?medium-term? nuclear-waste dump were also stalled until this year, as the most likely site for such a facility is New Mexico. But Bingaman, the New Mexican who chaired Senate Energy and Natural Resources, was not a fan. Now that he?s retired and been replaced by Wyden?whose state has a closed nuclear-power plant that still stores radioactive waste?plans for a ?medium-term? nuclear-waste storage dump are suddenly on the move.

Ethanol Reform

For the first time since Obama won the White House in 2008, the top Republican and top Democrat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee are working collaboratively on a controversial piece of energy policy: the renewable-fuels standard. There?s growing opposition to the provisions of a 2005 law mandating that oil refiners blend an increasing share of plant-based ethanol into the nation?s gasoline mix. Oil companies complain it raises their costs, and the use of corn to produce ethanol has also contributed to rising food prices in the wake of last year?s drought. Meanwhile, the technology to produce ethanol affordably from nonfood crops still isn?t commercialized. Given those pressures, there?s a growing coalition of strange bedfellows?the oil industry, environmentalists, food manufacturers, and antipoverty groups?pushing for the law to be reformed. To that end, Upton and Waxman are working on a series of white papers aimed at opening up the issue for debate and, they hope, legislative action.

Hydropower

In January, House Republicans brought to the floor a bill to speed construction of small hydropower plants in the Pacific Northwest. The bill, sponsored by Republican Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington, was meant as a signal that the GOP was ready to work with Democrats on at least some form of renewable-energy legislation. It worked. Wyden has introduced a companion measure in the Senate. Members of both parties in both chambers are optimistic about its prospects.

A Lot Of People Diet To Lose Weight These Days | Easy Ways to ...

When we chose to change our eating habits, we usually diet to lose weight. Sometimes we may have health issues, such as high cholesterol, which is what leads us to eat healthier.

Often times we diet to lose weight because as we are overweight and realize that our eating habits may have gotten in this predicament to begin with.

It is possible to just exercise and lose weight, but sooner or later the person will not lose any more weight without changing eating habits as well. Most of the time it is the other way around; people diet, that is they count carbohydrates, fat grams, or calories, somehow limiting their food intake to reach weight loss goals.

Even though every source you read on diet to lose weight encourages combining the diet plan with exercise, not everyone does this right away. Of course, it is ideal to diet and exercise from the beginning of a diet plan, some people may feel overwhelmed by taking on too much change at once, if exercise has not been a part of their life.

There are quite a few online support sites to visit, that have a multitude of information for anyone looking to diet to lose weight. Some diets work better for some than others, for instance, the Atkins diet required quite a drastic cut in carbohydrates, which may not be an appropriate diet to lose weight for everyone.

The South Beach Diet is a popular diet to lose weight because it allows dieters to eat many of the foods they eat anyway and is not quite as restrictive as others. There are also weight loss systems such as Jenny Craig, the LA Weight Loss Center, or Curves for Women.

All of these programs are great and offer a good deal of support for anyone who wants to diet to lose weight. Exercise is encouraged, and for the Curves for Women plan, it is the central part of the program.

When you do decide to diet to lose weight, be sure you visit with your healthcare provider first before beginning your program, especially if you have quite a bit of weight to lose, or if you have health issues that may be of concern. Exercise should not be contraindicated for anyone and can be tailored for each individual dieter?s specific needs.

You diet to lose weight, but you must also incorporate exercise into your plan. You will gain greater health, and also be able to maintain your diet and fitness goals.

Theater review: 'Menopause' finds comedic carthasis in 'the change ...

Times' theater reviewer C.B. Goldsmith always does what I ask him, and he does it thoughtfully and promptly. Unfortunately, I don't always reciprocate as I should. Take his review of "Menopause The Musical," for example. He attended Tuesday's opening night performance at the Plaza Theatre (the touring company performed it again on Wednesday) at the Plaza Theatre and turned in his review on Wednesday. Due to some unusual time constraints I dealt with last week, I wasn't able to get to it until today. So, sorry for the late posting, but here's his thoughtful review of that performance.

?

By C.B. Goldsmith

?How can it be that on a giant planet, in a big city, on a street full of neighbors, with family and friends, we can feel so alone? We hold tight to ourselves and make our stand within these flimsy forts we call our bodies, but they age and throw us out.

??Menopause The Musical? may be a musical comedy, but it addresses this human condition, which can make the women who experience it feel so along. The touring musical turned the Plaza Theater on Tuesday night, the first of a two-night run, into one part confessional and one part revival meeting, addressing a topic that until recently was (like its sufferers) hidden in plain sight.

?Forty one years ago, the groundbreaking television show ?All In The Family? kicked opened that door and in an episode entitled ?Edith?s Problem.? In these ensuing years, this issue (like so many) has emerged from the shadows and become yet another vehicle to allow half the planet to feel less alone.

"Menopause The Musical? uses four disparate women of a certain age, shopping in a New York City department store, to share their stories ? and their symptoms ? in the revelation of a collective truth, which a predominantly female audience was uproariously delighted to share. The women are archetypes and, most often, well represent all women.?

There is the Professional Woman, played by Nicole Lee; the Soap Star (Cherie Price); the Earth Mother (Ingrid Cole) and last, but far from least, the Iowa Housewife (Roberta B. Wall). All were powerful, with the terrific, full voices one would expect from an Actors Equity (union) touring company. Each brought a subtle humanity to what could have been ? in the hands of a lesser writer than show creator Jeanie Linders ? generic caricatures of all women.?

?Cole and Wall delivered powerful comedy. Price delivered the pathos inherent in an aging actress. Lee centered this work around her musical hurricane of a voice, which rattled rafters. All four had the voices to give heft to what sometimes was a trifle musically, and the comedic chops to consistently turn the broadest of exposition nearer to universal truths.

?The music is song parody of the soft rock and R&B of recent times and was only moderately clever, which is about as good as most song parody gets. The comedy is broad and over the top, which, judging from the roars around me, was just about perfect for this cultural conduit.

?Menopause The Musical? is, in a classical musical comedy aesthetic, not much that is new or novel. It can be painfully hokey but in a theater full of folks having the absolute time of their lives, this criticism is as irrelevant as the critic himself.

?This show illustrates theater as a transformative agent for change and to judge it by the material alone is to miss the bigger picture. Women walk a razor?s edge in a ?man?s world.? They are the life givers, yet this gift has a shelf life. We revere them for the miracle of their fertility, but when this gift fades, we sometimes tend to devalue them unknowingly. Older men can have second acts amidst the big boy?s toys of newer cars or newer wives or newer hair. But for millennia, women have been expected to go back to their cave (or tent or rooms) and get over this change of life.?

?At its best, ?Menopause The Musical? addresses this inequality. The suggested cures of Prozac, plastic surgery and keeping it to themselves can be less about women than it is about the people around them, especially men, and their needs.

What lit up the theater and electrified the audience was the shared cure of community. By illuminating what once was suffered in private by women hidden in plain sight, an entire audience was liberated from their solitude by this light and humorous work.?

?It was wildly powerful to sit amidst women emancipated, and entertained, by the shared fading of shame. This was their story within a theater that belonged to them, and it was a privilege to be allowed witness this.

The falter and the failure of our bodies is the shared destiny of us all. Simone de Beauvoir framed it wonderfully when she said: ?To lose confidence in one?s body is to lose confidence in oneself.??

What ?Menopause The Musical? offers women is the freedom to not be so alone amidst this shared truth.

?

?

Transformers 4 Plot Details Revealed

transformers-4-logo-slice

As Michael Bay gears up to direct yet another Transformers movie this year, some plot details for the fourth installment in the franchise have started to surface.? We know that Transformers 4 won?t include any of the human characters from the previous films (save for a possible Josh Duhamel cameo), with Mark Wahlberg leading the series? new cast.? Bay also previously said that they?ve ?redesigned everything? for the pic so they will be showcasing some shiny new toys robots.

Now a production notice from Michigan granting Transformers 4 permission to shoot in Detroit with a hefty tax incentive this spring has revealed some of the first solid plot details for the film.? Hit the jump to read on.

michael-bay-transformersPer the Michigan Film Office (via CS), Transformers 4 is expected to film in the metro Detroit area this spring.? This isn?t the franchise?s first time in Detroit, as portions of Dark of the Moon were shot there as well.? The synopsis for the pic, according to the press release, is as follows:

As humanity picks up the pieces, following the conclusion of?Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Autobots and Decepticons have all but vanished from the face of the planet. However, a group of powerful, ingenious businessman and scientists attempt to learn from past Transformer incursions and push the boundaries of technology beyond what they can control ? all while an ancient, powerful Transformer menace sets Earth in his crosshairs. The epic adventure and battle between good and evil, freedom and enslavement ensues.

So it appears that the old adage from Jurassic Park??They were so busy trying to figure out if they could, they forgot to think about if they should??applies to the Transformers 4 storyline.? It?ll be interesting to see if Wahlberg plays one of these aforemented businessmen or scientists, or if he?ll simply play a regular guy in the wrong place at the wrong time a la Shia LaBeouf?s Sam Witwicky.? Whatever the case, expect to hear more news concerning Transformers 4 soon as production gears up to begin in anticipation of the film?s June 27, 2014 release date.

Judge appointed to oversee Steubenville case

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? A large following of "nameless bloggers" alleging a cover-up of a rape investigation spurred an eastern Ohio judge to ask that someone from outside the community oversee a grand jury looking into new charges related to the assault.

Jefferson County Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr. also asked that outside judges be appointed to prosecute any individuals the grand jury might charge.

In response, Chief Justice Maureen O'Connor of the State Supreme Court on Thursday appointed a retired Summit County judge to handle the grand jury, which meets in April.

Bruzzese noted in his March 14 request "a substantial controversy surrounding this case provoked primarily by nameless bloggers making allegations of cover-up."

"These nameless bloggers, while having produced no evidence of a cover-up have managed to assemble quite a following locally, nationally and internationally," the judge said.

As a result, no local officials should have anything to do with the grand jury proposed by Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, Bruzzese said.

Defense attorney Walter Madison, right, holds his client, 16-year-old Ma'Lik Richmond, second from right, while defense attorney Adam Nemann, left, sits with his client Trent Mays, foreground, 17, as Judge Thomas Lipps pronounces them both delinquent on rape and other charges after their trial in juvenile court in Steubenville, Ohio, Sunday, March 17, 2013. Two high school football players were convicted Sunday of raping a 16-year-old West Virginia girl in Steubenville last summer after an alcohol-fueled party. One was sentenced to a minimum of one year in juvenile detention, the other to two years.

A special judge, Thomas Lipps of Cincinnati, handled that case, including the five-day trial last week. Immediately afterward, DeWine announced that a grand jury would investigate whether others should faces charges, including anyone who failed to speak up following reports of the rape.

School officials and Steubenville's 27 football coaches could possibly face charges if they knew about the rape but didn't report it because they are among those required by state law to report possible child abuse.

O'Connor appointed retired Judge Patricia Ann Cosgrove to oversee the grand jury.

Cosgrove is no stranger to high-profile cases. In 2011, she handled the trial of Kelley Williams-Bolar, an Akron woman convicted of falsifying documents to enroll her daughters in the Copley-Fairlawn schools from 2006 to 2008. Gov. John Kasich later reduced the felony convictions to misdemeanors.

In 2005, Cosgrove convicted a prominent Akron restaurant owner's wife of aiding in the drive-by shooting death of a former lover by the third member of a love triangle. Cosgrove sentenced Cynthia George to 20 years to life following the nonjury trial.

Two years later, George was released from prison after the 9th Ohio District Court of Appeals in Akron overturned Cosgrove's decision, ruling the judge lacked sufficient evidence to convict George.

SpaceX's Merlin 1D engine gets flight qualified, Musk expects launch this year

SpaceX's Merlin 1D engine gets flight qualified, Musk says it will fly this year

It's been quite the eventful year for the team at SpaceX. A few weeks after sending a Dragon capsule to the International Space Station, Elon Musk's company announced that its Merlin 1D engine managed to snag flight qualification, thanks to 1,970 seconds of testing time at its McGregor, Texas facility. That adds up to more than 10 full mission durations. The engine scored a ratio of 4:1 for critical engine life parameters, well above the industry's 2:1 standard. SpaceX will waste little time in getting it off the ground -- Musk said the engine will be taking off this year, as part of a Falcon 9 flight.

Under the skin, a tiny laboratory

Mar. 19, 2013 ? Humans are veritable chemical factories -- we manufacture thousands of substances and transport them, via our blood, throughout our bodies. Some of these substances can be used as indicators of our health status. A team of EPFL scientists has developed a tiny device that can analyze the concentration of these substances in the blood. Implanted just beneath the skin, it can detect up to five proteins and organic acids simultaneously, and then transmit the results directly to a doctor's computer. This method will allow a much more personalized level of care than traditional blood tests can provide. Health care providers will be better able to monitor patients, particularly those with chronic illness or those undergoing chemotherapy. The prototype, still in the experimental stages, has demonstrated that it can reliably detect several commonly traced substances.

The research results will be published and presented March 20, 2013 in Europe's largest electronics conference, DATE 13.

Three cubic millimeters of technology

The device was developed by a team led by EPFL scientists Giovanni de Micheli and Sandro Carrara. The implant, a real gem of concentrated technology, is only a few cubic millimeters in volume but includes five sensors, a radio transmitter and a power delivery system. Outside the body, a battery patch provides 1/10 watt of power, through the patient's skin -- thus there's no need to operate every time the battery needs changing.

Information is routed through a series of stages, from the patient's body to the doctor's computer screen. The implant emits radio waves over a safe frequency. The patch collects the data and transmits them via Bluetooth to a mobile phone, which then sends them to the doctor over the cellular network.

A system that can detect numerous substances

Great care was taken in developing the sensors. To capture the targeted substance in the body -- such as lactate, glucose, or ATP -- each sensor's surface is covered with an enzyme. "Potentially, we could detect just about anything," explains De Micheli. "But the enzymes have a limited lifespan, and we have to design them to last as long as possible." The enzymes currently being tested are good for about a month and a half; that's already long enough for many applications. "In addition, it's very easy to remove and replace the implant, since it's so small."

The electronics were a considerable challenge as well. "It was not easy to get a system like this to work on just a tenth of a watt," de Micheli explains. The researchers also struggled to design the minuscule electrical coil that receives the power from the patch.

Towards personalized chemotherapy

The implant could be particularly useful in chemotherapy applications. Currently, oncologists use occasional blood tests to evaluate their patients' tolerance to a particular treatment dosage. In these conditions, it is very difficult to administer the optimal dose. De Micheli is convinced his system will be an important step towards better, more personalized medicine. "It will allow direct and continuous monitoring based on a patient's individual tolerance, and not on age and weight charts or weekly blood tests."

In patients with chronic illness, the implants could send alerts even before symptoms emerge, and anticipate the need for medication. "In a general sense, our system has enormous potential in cases where the evolution of a pathology needs to be monitored or the tolerance to a treatment tested."

The prototype has already been tested in the laboratory for five different substances, and proved as reliable as traditional analysis methods. The project brought together eletronics experts, computer scientists, doctors and biologists from EPFL, the Istituto di Ricerca di Bellinzona, EMPA and ETHZ. It is part of the Swiss Nano-Tera program, whose goal is to encourage interdisciplinary research in the environmental and medical fields. Researchers hope the system will be commercially available within 4 years.

Cushioned heel running shoes may alter adolescent biomechanics, performance

Mar. 19, 2013 ? Many of today's running shoes feature a heavy cushioned heel. New research presented today at the 2013 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) found that these shoes may alter an adolescent runner's biomechanics (the forces exerted by muscles and gravity on the skeletal structure) and diminish performance.

Researchers recruited 12 adolescent competitive athletes from local track teams, and asked them to run on a treadmill in large heel trainers, track flats and without any shoes (barefoot) at four different speeds. Biomechanics -- stride length, heel height during posterior swing phase and foot/ground contact -- were measured with a motion capture system.

"Running barefoot or running in less of a running shoe (toe shoes, for example) is a newer trend," said Scott Mullen, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon at The University of Kansas Hospital. "What we were trying to evaluate is whether or not the foot strike would change in an adolescent -- who doesn't yet have a permanently established gate -- when they changed their shoe or running speed."

The researchers found that shoe type "dramatically" altered running biomechanics in the adolescent runners. When wearing cushioned heel trainers, the athletes landed on their heel 69.8 percent of the time at all speeds. With the track flats, the heel was the first point of contact less than 35 percent of the time; and when barefoot, less than 30 percent of the time. Shoes with cushioned heels promote a heel-strike running pattern, whereas runners with track flats and barefoot had a forefoot or mid-foot strike pattern.

"What we found is that simply by changing their footwear, the runners' foot strike would change," said Dr. Mullen. "When they ran in the cushioned heel or an average running shoe ? even when running a 5-minute mile ? the athletes landed on their heel first."

Many adolescent runners train in cushioned heels and compete in track spikes, "which may give them less of a (performance) advantage" in competition, said Dr. Mullen.

As a 2010 study found that heel strike running distributes more energy to hips and knees, running in flat- soled shoes that promote a forefoot strike may "present a healthier foot strike for runners over a lifetime, possibly resulting in fewer hip and knee problems," said Dr. Mullen. More research is needed to determine the effects of shoes on foot strike.

Antarctica's first whale skeleton found with nine new deep-sea species

Mar. 18, 2013 ? Marine biologists have, for the first time, found a whale skeleton on the ocean floor near Antarctica, giving new insights into life in the sea depths. The discovery was made almost a mile below the surface in an undersea crater and includes the find of at least nine new species of deep-sea organisms thriving on the bones.

The research, involving the University of Southampton, Natural History Museum, British Antarctic Survey, National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and Oxford University, is published today in Deep-Sea Research II: Topical Studies in Oceanography.

"The planet's largest animals are also a part of the ecology of the very deep ocean, providing a rich habitat of food and shelter for deep sea animals for many years after their death," says Diva Amon, lead author of the paper based at University of Southampton Ocean and Earth Science (which is based at NOC) and the Natural History Museum. "Examining the remains of this southern Minke whale gives insight into how nutrients are recycled in the ocean, which may be a globally important process in our oceans."

Worldwide, only six natural whale skeletons have ever been found on the seafloor. Scientists have previously studied whale carcasses, known as a 'whale fall', by sinking bones and whole carcasses. Despite large populations of whales in the Antarctic, whale falls have not been studied in this region until now.

"At the moment, the only way to find a whale fall is to navigate right over one with an underwater vehicle," says co-author Dr Jon Copley of University of Southampton Ocean and Earth Science. Exploring an undersea crater near the South Sandwich Islands gave scientists just that chance encounter. "We were just finishing a dive with the UK's remotely operated vehicle, Isis, when we glimpsed a row of pale-coloured blocks in the distance, which turned out to be whale vertebrae on the seabed," continues Dr Copley.

When a whale dies and sinks to the ocean floor, scavengers quickly strip its flesh. Over time, other organisms then colonise the skeleton and gradually use up its remaining nutrients. Bacteria break down the fats stored in whale bones, for example, and in turn provide food for other marine life. Other animals commonly known as zombie worms can also digest whale bone.

"One of the great remaining mysteries of deep ocean biology is how these tiny invertebrates can spread between the isolated habitats these whale carcasses provide on the seafloor," says co-author Dr Adrian Glover at the Natural History Museum. 'Our discovery fills important gaps in this knowledge.'

The team surveyed the whale skeleton using high-definition cameras to examine the deep-sea animals living on the bones and collected samples to analyse ashore. Researchers think that the skeleton may have been on the seafloor for several decades. Samples also revealed several new species of deep-sea creatures thriving on the whale's remains, including a 'bone-eating zombie worm' known as Osedax burrowing into the bones and a new species of isopod crustacean, similar to woodlice, crawling over the skeleton. There were also limpets identical to those living at nearby deep-sea volcanic vents.

School shooter wears 'KILLER' shirt, gets life in prison

Pool/The News-Herald via AP

T.J. Lane, wearing a "KILLER" T-shirt, smirks as he listens to the judge during sentencing on Tuesday in Chardon, Ohio.

By Elizabeth Chuck, Staff Writer, NBC News

Editor's warning: This story contains graphic content.?

An Ohio judge has sentenced T.J. Lane, the Ohio teen charged with shooting three students to death and wounding three others last February, to life in prison without the possibility of parole.?

Lane showed up to his sentencing wearing a white T-shirt with the word "KILLER" in capital letters scrawled on it --?the same word police say he had emblazoned on his shirt the day of the shootings at Chardon High School.

Lane, 18,?pleaded guilty last month to all charges?against him in the Feb. 27, 2012, shootings, in which he opened fire on a cafeteria table full of students?in the rural community of Chardon.

In a brief statement during his sentencing on Tuesday, Lane flipped his middle finger at people in the courtroom, which included family members of his victims,?reported NBC affiliate WKYC.com. He revealed his "KILLER" T-shirt to the court once he was inside, taking off a blue button-down he had worn on the way in, the station reported.

Pool / The News-Herald via AP

T.J. Lane unbuttons his shirt during sentencing Tuesday in Chardon, Ohio.

Three students --?Demetrius Hewlin, 16; Russell King Jr., 17; and Daniel Parmertor, 16 -- were killed last February.?Nate Mueller and Joy Rickers were wounded, as was?Nick Walczak, who is paralyzed from the waist down, according to Reuters.?

Lane has not given a motive for the shootings, which rocked the tiny town 30 miles outside Cleveland.?He gave only a short, defiant statement in the courtroom on Tuesday: "This hand that pulled the trigger that killed your sons now masturbates to the memory. F--- all of you."

Gasps were heard in the courtroom as Lane then proceeded to stick up his middle finger at both his own relatives and those of his victims,?The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported. Some people started crying.

Geauga County Judge David Fuhry sentenced Lane to three life sentences without eligibility for parole for three counts of murder, plus 8 years for a fourth count of attempted aggravated murder, 6 years for a fifth count of attempted aggravated murder, and 6 years for a sixth count of felonious assault.

In handing him the sentences, Fuhry said Lane lacked remorse for the killings.?Lane was ruled mentally competent enough to stand trial last year despite evidence he suffers from hallucinations and psychosis. Fuhry said Tuesday that court examinations showed Lane faked mental illness and was such a smart student that he was set to graduate from high school early, Reuters reported.?

The families of the boys who died in the shooting have attended every one of Lane?s court hearings, The Plain Dealer said. Other victims' family members also attended Tuesday's sentencing, and read statements to the court ahead of Lane's sentencing.

"Because of you, our quiet little town will never be the same. Why? Why did you do it? Why?"?Holly Walczak, mother of paralyzed victim Nick Walczak, said in court on Tuesday. Lane smiled as she read her statement,?The Plain Dealer said.

Dina Parmertor, mother of slain victim of Daniel, said, "I want you to be ensured years and years of pain, which in my opinion is not enough. You don?t deserve to take another breath while my 16-year-old son lies in the ground because of your cold, disgusting actions."

"You?re a pathetic excuse for a human being. In fact, you're not even human. You?re a monster," she added, according to The Plain Dealer.

Lane's sister, Sadie, who was in Chardon High School's cafeteria when her brother opened fire, also spoke on Tuesday, talking to reporters outside of the courthouse after the sentencing.

"The brother in the courtroom and that did this is not the brother I knew,"?she said, offering her condolences to victims' families.?

She described the moment she learned from a police officer who the shooter was last February.?

?Along with other students, I heard the gunshots and screams, ran for my life, ducked under tables, hid in the teachers? lounge, not knowing who the shooter was,? Sadie Lane said. "When those words hit me, I shook and cried and denied that all this could be true."

She said she hoped for some good to come from the situation.?

"It may be hard for some to understand, but I love my brother, and I hope he can touch other lives in a positive way," she said.

Lane lived with his grandparents and attended an alternative school for students who haven't succeeded in traditional schools. He was waiting for the bus to his school from Chardon High when he began shooting from a .22-caliber semiautomatic Ruger handgun last February, according to police reports.?

He was taken into custody a short distance from where the shootings happened.

Reuters contributed to this report.
