Nakheel profit up 36% as Dubai property recovers

Dubai real estate developer Nakheel on Monday posted a first half net profit of $208.8 million, up 36.5 percent compared with the same period of 2011, saying it reflected a recovery in the sector.

Net profit came in at 767 million dirhams ($208.8 million dollars, 170.3 million euros) for the six months to June 30 compared with 562 million dirhams in 2011, Nakheel said in a statement.

Revenues were 31 billion dirhams in the first half thanks to the sale of many real estate units, amounting to an annual rise of 112 percent, according to the statement.

Nakheel underwent a restructuring programme after Dubai's property bubble burst in 2009, concluding the process in August last year.

Before the crisis struck, it had borrowed heavily to finance its projects, including iconic palm-shaped man-made islands off the coast of the Gulf emirate.

"The financial performance is reflective of the continuous support and commitment made by the government of Dubai and the board of directors of Nakheel to implement a sustainable business strategy for the medium to long term and largely due to better cost and cash management," it said.

"The positive results... following from the robust financial results achieved in the year 2011 are reflective of the strong growth in the real estate market in Dubai where Nakheel is a dominant player and will continue to strengthen its position with the passage of time."

Pat replied to Sentient Biped's discussion MS CHurch: Marriage is only for straight white couples.

In this and other ways, Mississippi seems to insist on being an anachronism within the United States.? For them, the Emancipation Proclamation and the 14th Amendment to the Constitution were never written, or for some reason, they don't apply to that state.

Granted, a church is a private organization and can conduct itself as it pleases.? HOWEVER ... it does exist within a community, and it is reasonable that a community react, either positively or negatively, to the behavior of one of its elements.? Even if a given town had a plurality or even a majority of people with such an attitude, there remains the larger community of the state, and then that of the United States.

What's that old hymn?? "There's No Hiding Place Down Here!"

Marketing Communications Strategy Techniques for Your Business ...

One of the most vital aspects when it comes to building your network marketing business is you marketing communications strategy. After all, everything that you?re doing for your online business involves sending a message to your target audience, and how you select to communicate with them is the key in converting your leads into customers and business partners.

Knowing the right thing to say, when to say it, and how best to say it isn?t a skill that you?re born with. So if you?re afraid about messing up when communicating with your prospects, or if you think that you?re the most withdrawn individual on the planet, then keep in mind that the business entrepreneurs who are currently earning bucket loads of funds each month definitely weren?t born equipped with their current social skill level.

By putting themselves out there, communicating with people, messing up, and from sheer experience, this is how the top income earners? whose names you hear so often are able to sell and recruit so easily. I think it?s right to say that it takes years of experience to reach this level.

So there?s that? or you could save yourself time and the I?d like to hide in my corner moments by observing how the leader?s do it and imitate what they do!

This is not to say you neglect the experience side of things altogether! I?m talking about a mixture of observing what the pros do and practicing at the same time.

I?ll be going over 3 things that you may use in your marketing communications strategy when communicating to your prospects that could help beef up your sales and sign ups.

To make things easier, they will all be related to one another and build off of one another.

3 Things You Need to Carry out In Your Marketing Communications Strategy

In your marketing communications strategy, how you position yourself when communicating to your target market can either make or break the consultation. Remember you are the ?business owner? thus you are the one who is supposed to be in control. You have to be the one taking the reins to sheer the conversation where you want it to go, not the customer.

For you to do this you have to be the one asking the questions. Don?t just get right into the sale and assume they will buy from you. Hard selling and nagging them with the features of a product won?t get you anywhere. The only thing it?ll yield is nonchalant nods from your potential business partners so you could hurry up and finish your pitch so they can disappear.

Now this could take a little getting used to since thinking up what type of questions you should be asking is the hard part. But for the sake of simplicity, you can never go wrong in a conversation when you ask questions that allow the customer to reveal more about themselves and open up.

This involves asking why they are looking for a specific product or company, what made them decide to choose that particular product, how it will affect their future and so on and so forth.

One thing that you can make sure of is you can never go wrong in a conversation when you focus your attention on your prospects wants and needs.

This is great for your marketing communications strategy because instead of drawing all the attention to what it is that you?re selling like most marketers and ?salespeople? do, you?re shocking your prospect by actually taking their best interests into consideration.

Ok next up, is how you present your product to your prospects. If you go on a long rant about the features and benefits of your products, most people honestly don?t care one way or the other.

Why? Because there are lots of products out there who offer the same thing that your product does. You?ve no doubtely heard of all the pitches that use the tag line ?our product is the only one of its? kind? millions of times so it?s fair to say it?s a line most consumers are wary of.

In place of using this approach, angle your marketing to how your system, or how joining your primary company can solve the pain that the prospect is currently experiencing.

For example, a prospect is burned out from working 10-14 hour days at a job that they loathe. By joining your company, they will never have to worry about financial difficulties ever again and will be able to dig their life again.

By promoting your product as an answer to their pain, people are more likely to think about ordering your product more than if you just shove the features in their face.

However with this marketing communications strategy, I highly recommend that you be honest with your prospect and do not trick them. If your primary company or service isn?t what they?re looking for, don?t be a trickster and try to warp it just so you can make money off of them.

Lastly, this point one builds with the last point that I just made: being honest. There are innumerable scams, liars and cheats on the internet nowadays and if you are building a brand of yourself, then it would make perfect sense to keep your reputation intact yes?

Constructing a team of individuals to partner up with and customers is a rule where I personally favour quality over quantity. There?s no point recruiting someone who isn?t 100% in the game because they will end up wasting your time and leave your team anyway.

Use these tactis in your marketing communications strategy and see if your results will perk up. As a result of asking questions you will find out more what pain your customer is going through and whether your product is the appropriate clarification for them.

GA to get federal grant to help veterans find jobs

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia is set to receive a $750,000 federal grant to help returning Army veterans find jobs.

The funding was announced Tuesday by Labor Secretary Hilda Solis. The grants are set to be implemented over the next two years.

Agency officials say the money will help pay for job training and placement services. Job-related outreach activities will also be expanded.

Similar federal grants will go to Texas, Illinois and North Carolina. The four states have large populations of Army veterans who claim unemployment and have been actively working with both the Labor Department and the Army to improve veterans' access to the public workforce system

Android Central international round-up - July 28, 2012

Android Central

The Olympic Games kicked off in London this week, starting with an opening ceremony featuring two leading smartphones from Samsung, the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note. And with Samsung being not only a leading Android manufacturer, but a global Olympic partner, it's been behind many of the Olympic Android news over the past week, launching limited edition back covers and Android apps based around the games.

But it wasn't all good news for Samsung fans this week, as there was some confusion surrounding the fate of local search on the international Galaxy S3. First it appeared the feature had been pulled, seemingly to avoid further litigation from Apple. However, a few days later it emerged that local search had been removed in error, and since then an OTA has gone out to reinstate the feature.

Though the Olympics is taking place in London over the next few weeks, many Brits are still planning on traveling overseas, with a majority holidaying in Europe. So to help British visitors to Europe get the best deal from their network, we've published our complete guide to each of the UK carriers' roaming plans. A recent ruling from the EU has put an end to the days of paying several pounds per megabyte of roaming data, and there's actually a fair selection of good roaming deals around now. So you'll definitely want to check out our guide if you're hopping across the channel over the next couple of months.

We also got an early sneak peek at some Sony phones expected to be unveiled at IFA in Berlin next month. The entryl-level "Xperia J," as well as the flagship LT30p "Mint" and LT29i "Hayabusa" all leaked out in various forms. All three run Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, and it looks like Sony's abandoned the "clear element" in its earlier 2012 designs in favor of a more traditional candybar layout.

Check the list below for a full run-down of all the major international stories over the past week. If you've got news, you can tip us at the usual address.

Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe Shames The NPP | VibeGhana.com

By Margaret Jackson

?

For the very first time in many, many years I could not believe what I was reading. And to make sure that I was reading the correct thing I had to re-read the article to ensure that I got the information or facts right. And the other thing I did was to make sure that my eyes were not deceiving me about the writer of that article titled, ?Akufo-Addo Should Not Have Encouraged Great Cape Greed.?

Dr. Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe, Jr., Associate Professor of English, Journalism and Creative Writing at Nassau Community College of the State University of New York is a known columnist by many Ghanaians especially those who love to read feature articles on political, economic and social issues about Ghana. His thousands of articles are mainly littered on multiple Ghanaian websites and everybody knows where his heart is as far as political party affiliation is concerned.

To make the story even juicier, Okoampa-Ahoofe is the darling of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who defends Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, NPPs Presidential Candidate for the 2012 elections on any given day. I have never read any article of his that he has ever raised a finger on Akufo-Addo. In fact, as a citizen of Akyem and someone related to Akufo-Addo, the Associate Professor has adopted the see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil attitude on any issue bothering on Akufo-Addo.

And to the amazement of everybody, Okoampa-Ahoofe has done his bit of defense of Akufo-Addo on everything very religiously. You will not want to read the hateful and terrible comments that people spew on Okoampa-Ahoofe?s articles but this Akufo-Addo Diaspora Soldier has soldiered on to the astonishment of even NPP supporters. He had never been bothered by any insults on any article as far as the article is promoting or guarding the tainted image of Akufo-Addo.

Therefore, if for the very first time you read an article in which Dr. Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe, Jr., the brash defender of Akufo-Addo, is questioning the judgment of Akufo-Addo on the unending story of Judgment Debt Controversy that seems to have engulfed the country since November 2011, it gives you the biggest cause for concern. I can say with all certainty that Okoampa-Ahoofe will be the very last man standing for Akufo-Addo; therefore, if he has dared to criticize him on the judgment debt saga, then it is very obvious that Akufo-Addo has indeed crossed the line.

Barely a week ago, Nana Akufo-Addo, who has been junketing around the country slamming the NDC government on the Woyome saga and even stated emphatically and multiple times that he will never allow anything ?Woyome? in his dream government, got the rudest shock of his life when he was exposed at a press conference organized by the government and addressed by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Deputy Information Minister, that Akufo-Addo wrote a letter dated October 3, 2011, recommending that the Ministry of Finance should pay about $1.3 Million to the Great Cape Company of Switzerland for the wrongful termination of a contract to supply clinker to the Ghana National Procurement Agency (GNPA). The incident occurred under the erstwhile General F. W. K. Akuffo?s led Supreme Military Country regime in 1978. To buttress this revelation, a copy of the letter written by Akufo-Addo was produced at the press conference.

But the NPP immediately jumped on the revelation slamming it as nothing to write home about. Whilst somebody even stated that the NDC government ?scored an own goal? in their futile attempt to rope in Nana Akufo-Addo in the judgment debt saga, other NPP folks decided not to talk about the double standard and shameful behaviour of Akufo-Addo but rather decided to mock the Information Minister, Fritz Baffour, for introducing Ablakwa during the press conference.

Therefore, for about a week now, the NPP folks who have been feeling the heat of the role played by Akufo-Addo in the Great Cape Company story have not offered any credible reason/s as to why Akufo-Addo did what he did, whilst Akufo-Addo, as usual has also been mute on that issue. You know very well that Akufo-Addo never talks about any issue concerning him.

But Okoampa-Ahoofe, NPP Chief Defender has a different take. Now hear him in his own words, ?Now, where Nana Akufo-Addo?s error in judgment comes up regards the official letter that the now-presidential candidate of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is alleged to have written to the extant Minister of Finance, asking for a payment to be made to the Great Cape Company. One professionally expects that in 2001, as Ghana?s newly-appointed Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Nana Akufo-Addo?s aforesaid letter had been duly copied to the plaintiffs. If so, then the former NPP-MP for Akyem-Abuakwa South ought to have flatly refused to ?authenticate? the same letter to Dr. Nat Tanoh, the local representative of the Great Cape Company ten long years later!?

Okoampa-Ahoofe continues, ?In other words, other than doing so purely on the informal basis of friendship ? or something clearly bordering on the extra-professional ? Nana Akufo-Addo ought not to have written his October 3, 2011 letter, allegedly seeking to authenticate his original letter of more than a decade earlier.?

This is what the NPP folks cannot seem to understand and are beating about the bush rather than venturing into the bush and taking the bull by the horn by saying that what Akufo-Addo did was wrong. The NPP cannot say this because the Woyome issue is part of their campaign message so openly saying that Akufo-Addo was dead wrong in writing the letter will knock off their so-called Woyome campaign message.

Now Okoampa-Ahoofe has shamed the NPP by pointing out that what Akufo-Addo did was wrong and his article would be further proof that what the NDC exposed concerning Akufo-Addo was the right thing to do. You cannot continue to slam something and be exposed for doing something related to the same thing and say that yours is no big deal.

The NPP can run but they cannot hide. They can weave and even adopt the rope-a-dope strategy which they have used effectively in the past but they cannot run away from the fact that Akufo-Addo is equally guilty when it comes to judgment debt payments. If Akufo-Addo is not guilty, why is that it is his hirelings who are defending him whilst he is completely quiet about the issue.

Akufo-Addo must prove to Ghanaians that he is his own man by coming out to say why he did what he did on the Great Cape Company debt issue. He is gradually becoming a wanna-be president who cannot talk about any controversy he has been implicated. Ghanaians should take note that if Akufo-Addo even today cannot address any issue concerning him, what then will happen if we mistakenly vote him into power and something dreadful happens.

LIVE: Facebook Earnings - Business Insider

just reported its second quarter earnings.

The company modestly beat Wall Street's expectations, which were unnaturally low, having been spoon-fed by the company during its Q2 IPO process.

"These earnings are meh," one equities analyst just told us over IM.

The stock is down more than 9% in after-hours trading. It's trading below $25 for the first time.

Ad revenues were up 28% year-over-year on a quarterly basis.

That beats Wall Street's gimme estimates of 19%, but it's more worrisome revenue deceleration from a company that has a revenue multiple of 15X.

By comparison, Google's business grew 21% from a much larger base (~$40 billion annual revenues) during the second quarter. Its revenue multiple is only 5X.

It is laughable that people were recently saying this company would be bigger than Google. If it ever does become that big (an increasingly absurd notion) it won't be because of its current ads business, that's for sure.

Facebook's profits are basically flat year-over-year because its operating profit margin has decreased. That's not good news for the stock (this was supposed to be a growth story). The margin is down because Facebook is investing, which is smart, but it's hurting the company's profitability.

Facebook hel a conference call to go through earnings at 5PM EST today. We took notes.

He expects 4 to 5 billion people to have smartphones. Building great services for the devices is important. People are adopting Facebook mobile services. 540 million. 67% more than the 325 million using it a year ago. These people are more active Facebook users. Mobile users are 20% more likely to use Facebook on any given day.?

He says primarily across iOS and Android.?

He talks about Facebook Camera, Instagram, et al.

Going forward, he says, expect improvment.

We can advertising in mobile he said: Sponsored Stories have "grown quickly and demonstrated early success."

We've already scene how social dynamics can transform industries like gaming, and we're seeing this happen in other industries like music.

He says Facebook allows apps to scale and grow quickly through Facebook distribution.

He says, to paraphrase, We can imagine a day where you buy a new car and you connect it with Facebook and it lights up with music and information provided to you by your friends.

He says Facebook's mobile platform is bigger than you think. It's not just games.

The best type of advertising is a message from a friend. The more advertising includes interesting content from people you care about. Advertising on Facebook today is giving a good ROI, but it can be better and more social.?

One important aspect of social ads is that they go to mobile and desktop. Social ads in News Feed are good for ads in mobile.

By the end of June, sponsored stories revenue was $1mm per day in revenue, half coming from mobile.

She says Facebook is word-of-mouth marketing at an unprecedented scale.

We believe we are well-positioned to compete for marketing dollars throughout the marketing tunnel: from demand generation to the demand fullfillment.

Search has been doing most demand fullfillment. Facebook has had some, in gaming mostly.

Demand generation is the big target, though.

How Facebook has improved advertising

1. Rolling out new ad products.

2. Demonstrating ROI.

3. Making it easier for busines to advertise.

She's talking about Sponsored Stories, where an advertiser can highlight something normal users say about their product to that user's friends.

Early results: Sponsored Stories perform multiple times better than ads in the right-hand column. They are the cornerstone of Facebook's ad strategy.

Sponsored Stories work on mobile because they go into the news feed, and Facebook avoids the "where do we put ads on a smaller screen" problem that others face.

There has been strong interest from clients asked if they want to buy sponsored stories just for mobile. Already $1mm day in revenue, with half in mobile.

We're in an early alpha test, but interest is strong. Emarketer estimates its a $2 billion market in the US.

Independent analysis of 60 campaigns, 45 of which happned in 1H, 70% returned on ad spend 3X or better. 45% returned 5X or better.

Electronic Arts advertised Battlefield Earth and got great returns (missed the numbers, sorry).

Barclays Cards targeted NFL credit cards ads to users based on the teams they like. 60% of improved credit card applications from the campaign came from Facebook.

Wooga increased downloads by 26% in US at an attractive cost per app install using Facebook ads.

Facebook is uniquely accessible to local advertisers because they are already setting up personal accounts. 11 mm businesses have pages on FB. 7mm are used every month. Hundreds of thousands of small businesses advertise on FB.?

Last quarter tested making it easier. Page owners can turn a post into an ad with a few clicks.

For the rest of 2012, the focus will be on ramping up sponsored stories in news feed.

18% increase in the numnber of ads delivered, 9% increase in price.

Add impressions growth is slower than user-growth as people go mobile, this is despite more ad units per page on the Web.

Asia and other markets are doing better in terms of pricing. The fast volume growth does reduce worldwide price per ad.

European price per ad decreased due to the macro environment there.

Ebersmann says FB will increase the number of sponsored stories, can target them better, can increase demand by selling them better.

Gaming payments are flat, Ebersmann believes, because gaming in general is growing on mobile where Facebook does not do payments.?

58% of users were active contributors.

Strong engagement is the foundation for everything we're trying to accomplish.

Facebook reviewed its geographic measurements. It also refined and improved its measurement of dupe accounts. This lead to an increased number of dupe accounts estimated by the company.

Biggest factor were employee stock compensation.

Headcount increased 50%. FB is hiring in mobile, platform and monetization.

In 2H, expenses should increase significantly over last year, higher than the ?rate in Q2. At this early stage, investment is a priority, not margins.

Sheryl's answer: FBX's goal is to show more relevant ads. We're at a very early alpha stage test. We're really encouraged by how interested our advertisers are.

On Yahoo deal: There is a cross-license. Also will work with Yahoo on tentpole events. She congratulations Marissa Mayer, the new CEO of Yahoo.

Mark answers.

Steady growth in engagement among all the cohorts, including younger ones.

We've always been signifcantly smaller per employee compared with the number of people we serve in the world. Says people love working at Facebook because of that. It's also part of strategy, he says. He says Facebook builds the platform, not the apps because of its limited human resources. "Over time it might make sense for us to build some of these things ourselves."

For the foreseeable future we're going to be way smaller than comparable companies.

Mark answers.

Facebook is the most used app on every mobile platform. He says, we want to increase the depth of the experience in addition to just growing users. We want to not just have apps that people use, but we want to support a development ecosystem. That's why we did the iOS integegration?there is a lot we can do "Without building out a new phone which wouldn't make much sense for us to do."

Ebersmann answers.

We have a limited amount of volume. We're working with advertisers to increase demand. We're creating better types of content that advertisers can sponsor to make it a good experience for consumers.

Sandberg answers.

Fewer than half. Working to increase that. Better engagement. Sponsored Stories will help.

Sheryl answers.

We're also seeing good results from other ads that have social context. FBX is early, but we show promising results for advertiers. We're also optimistic about early testing around mobile. What people do there is look at their News Feed and share. Ads in News Feed therefore make sense on mobile. Advertisers get a high ROI.

Ebersmann takes second question.

We made some changes to background pinging. When phones contact our services without a user being on the other end, we don't count that as usage. That had some impact. There are some drops due to holidays.

Mark answers.

The acquisition hasn't closed so there has been no integration.

"Our strategy has been to buy companies for talent." Excluding Instagram, that is must of our acquisitions and it will be going forward.

Ebersmann takes the second question.

When we look at 2H this year, we will make optimizations: drive demand, better targeting, etc. The big priority and oppty is Sponsored Stories. It's difficult to forecast what that will look like. We didn't ramp up Sponsored Stories until June. We feel like we're a in a good position. The forecasting is difficult because we're going to proceed slowly. We don't want to move quickly because we don't want to hurt user-engagement. We will learn what kind of speed of ramp up works for us.

Sheryl answers.

Looking at user-reaction.

Limiting the number we roll out. We intend to be cautious as we work on user-perception. Have not rolled out across all counties.

Sheryl answers the second question.

More than 40% of local business have no Web presence at all. Facebook has a huge advantage because those local business owners are using Facebook as users. When they use the product they see messages from other business. The product that we want them to use, Pages, is a lot like their own user profile. The leap is smaller.

Mark answers.

The basic approach we have for now is that we are building out the platform and other companies are building on top of that. You can view this is an ads and payments business, or you can view us as a platform that will transform industries and get some portion of the value for that. The media companies that are building on Open Graph, we aren't contributing as much value as we did with games, so the value coming back to Facebook is less. Over time, more nuanced experiences will become social. We'll build out the tools to get those products built and we'll build to capture the value.

Sheryl offers an answer too.

The commerce companies that really adapting social are seeing great responses. Fab is one. It's seeing 20% to 40% of its traffic from Facebook on a daily basis. We look at what people's shopping behavoirs are and want to be a major part of how people discover products.

Sheryl answers.?

We're still in that learning curve that took TV and search so long. The good news is that our ROI results are strong ? 3X and 5X. They are truly good. Our view is that our ads work, and if they continue to work we will be able to educate the market over time. We're on a good part of our growth trajectory.

Second question: no.

Ebersmaman answers last question. Obviously we're disappointed in where the stock is trading, but we think we are the same company we were before and that we'll be there in the long term.

Mark answers.

We have robust systems built around metrics in the News Feed. What we've seen is we can put in good sponsored content and not have it degrade those metrics. We're rolling out Sponsored Stories conservatively because we want to keep the quality high.

Sheryl answers.

We're optimistic. We want to make everyting people do social. We focus on how many developers are using our tool, how many of those apps are growing quickly, and how many are using ads. We're going to provide the ID and social layer for everything across Web and social layer. If you're choosing to develop a service, you'd choose to do it with us. We consider ourselves a partner company. We want to take social companies and make them big, and take big companies and make them social.

HBT: Brewers admit Greinke is all but gone

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin has dropped some very strong hints that he?ll be trading Zack Greinke before Tuesday?s deadline, but now he?s left zero doubt.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today spoke to Melvin today and reports that he ?will definitely be traded.?

Melvin said previously that the Brewers would deal Greinke if they couldn?t work out a long-term contract extension before the July 31 deadline and admitted to Nightengale that they haven?t negotiated since spring training because Greinke wants to test the market as a free agent:

I don?t think Zack is about the money personally. You get a young guy that?s [28], and in my conversations with him, you get a chance to be a free agent one time. You?ve got to look at that opportunity. He?s been in a small market here. A small market in Kansas City. He?s always said he enjoyed in, but he wants to take a look at everything out there.

There?s always been speculation that Greinke wouldn?t have interest in playing for a big-market team because of his social anxiety issues, but it?s not as if the Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers will be the only teams willing to offer him a ton of money as a free agent.

Melvin described Greinke as ?like a son to me? and praised his presence in the Brewers? clubhouse, saying ?it?s been a great experience having him for a year and a half.? And during that year-and-a-half Greinke is 25-9 with a 3.67 ERA and 323 strikeouts in 295 innings.

Nightengale lists the Rangers, Angels, Braves, and White Sox as the primary suitors for Greinke, but as Melvin said: ?There are a lot of teams that have shown interest. ? There are so many good things about him, it?s going to be difficult when we trade him.?

The Essence of Branding in Business | About Business Ideas

The appellation ?branding? has assorted meanings in altered contexts, but the accepted denominator from all the definitions is ?identity.? A agnate action applies for the aforementioned purpose, but with altered components.

Branding, in the simplest business sense, is the affiliation with assertive unique, abstruse altar? to analyze a assertive artefact or service. DeMarco: A tall task for Phillies' Amaro

GM must retool team while staying in win-now mode

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro signed ace Cole Hamels to a new contract this week, but has much more work to do to retool his team.

Thanks in part to the gift-giving tendencies of the Milwaukee Brewers' bullpen, the Philadelphia Phillies have run off a four-game winning streak ? three by walk-offs ? and generated some excitement in a season of miserable underachieving.

But they shouldn't be deceived about making a run for the playoffs ? an unlikely long shot after 99 games, nine games under .500, 9 1/2 games behind the second wild card and six teams to pass ? not to mention with two of three aces not pitching that way.

Instead, it's time for the front office to focus on what the roster will look like in 2013 and the near-beyond, when the Phillies will take another shot at winning a World Series before their aging core players reach the end of the line.

At the precipice of the luxury-tax threshold ? and with a 254-game-and-counting consecutive sellout streak at Citizens Bank Park ? the Phillies' only option is to reload.

"We're trying to be improvers,'' is how club president David Montgomery put it on Wednesday.

Montgomery was speaking at the press conference for Cole Hamels' six-year, $144-million contract extension, which was the first ? and very correct ? step in this process. Of all their pricey pieces, Hamels was the one they least could afford to lose ? a 28-year-old ace in the midst of his best season, smack in the prime of his career, seemingly with a half-dozen or so elite-level seasons in front of him.

This really was a compromise for both sides. Not that long ago, the Phillies had shown reluctance to go beyond three guaranteed years for pitchers (see Halladay, Roy). But the game's financial landscape has changed, and for as much as Hamels received ? reportedly a $6-million signing bonus, $19.5 million in 2013, $22.5 million per year in 2014-18 and either a vesting option for 2019 or $6-million buyout ? there is a feeling he could have received more in free agency.

In fact, when you consider that the Angels, Dodgers, Yankees and Red Sox all are in need of another front-of-the-rotation starter, CC Sabathia's record seven-year, $161-million deal seemed to be in jeopardy. So Hamels most likely took a bit less to stay with the only organization he has known since being picked 17th overall in the 2002 draft.

The legitimate question to ask is did the Hamels deal inhibit putting enough pieces in place to win in the near future? Look at the top-heavy financial obligations general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. faces in trying to add pieces to a puzzle that has come up way short this season. In 2013, the Phillies will pay (numbers from the Baseball Prospectus/Cots Baseball Contracts site):

  • $70.5 million to three starting pitchers ? Lee ($25 million), Halladay ($20), Hamels ($25.5 including signing bonus)
  • $90.5 million to four players, adding Ryan Howard ($20 million).
  • $129.5 million to seven players, adding Chase Utley ($15 million), Jonathan Papelbon ($13 million) and Jimmy Rollins ($11 million). And that's not counting Hunter Pence's arbitration-eligible salary, which should land between $13-$15 million.

Keep in mind that the Phillies' payroll was a tad under $100 million when they won the 2008 World Series. But the reality is the Phillies had no choice but to extend Hamels; he's that important going forward. Still, their needs are clear: third base, bullpen, outfield.

Dealing Lee would go the furthest to alleviate financial concerns, as he's owed $87.5 million (buyout included) over the next three seasons. But, that obligation limits his market to the financial elites ? Rangers (who have reported interest), Yankees, Dodgers, Angels, Red Sox and maybe a sleeper team or two.

It also doesn't help that Lee clearly is in a down year, and is nowhere near the league-elite starters. Forget the no-run-support argument; his ERA is 3.95 ? up 1.55 from his 2011 season mark, and by far his worst since 2007, when the Indians sent him back to the minors. Other measures similarly have risen, including WHIP, hits-per-nine innings and home-run ratio.

Still, you'd think he could bring a return that would fill two of those roster holes. But the Phillies have invested so much in their pitching since their postseason run began in 2007, it would mark a dramatic change in course for them to trade from their ultimate strength (actual or perceived). So count a potential Lee deal as the highest in both risk and reward; a truly gutsy move by Amaro, if he goes that way.

The Pence trade speculation seems strange, given that the Phillies let Jayson Werth and Raul Ibanez go over the last two winters, and it's highly likely Shane Victorino is in his final couple of months (or even week) in a Phillies uniform. How many outfielders can you let get away, especially when nobody has stepped up from the system, other than John Mayberry Jr.'s part-time contributions?

Pence has been the Phillies' best player this season besides Carlos Ruiz, is their only right-handed power threat, and is under control through next season. But again, that makes him more valuable to other clubs, and hence able to bring a bigger return ? probably two pieces that Amaro Jr. needs.

The Phillies have shown little interest to date in keeping Victorino out of free agency ? much as was the case with Werth. In the former, the Phils see a 33-year-old outfielder whose game is based on speed, and can envision a decline ahead. But if Pence is traded, Victorino's chances of returning increase.

Victorino is owed just over $3 million of the rest of this season, as is Joe Blanton. But as rental players heading to free agency this winter, they won't bring much in return.

The new collective bargaining agreement rules don't allow teams that acquire rent-a-players to receive draft picks when they leave through free agency. So, they're not showing the willingness to give up a highly rated prospect or valuable part for two-plus months of a rental player. For instance, the Reds reportedly turned down a Victorino-for-Logan Ondrusek proposed deal.

One way or another, Padres' third baseman Chase Headley could be a right answer, especially with Placido Polanco going on the disabled list. Headley is an above-average grinder-type (read: good fit in Philly) whose power is on the rise, and whose home/road splits suggest a nice uptick in production if he gets out of Petco Park. But he's attracting a lot of attention in this market.

So, especially in the next week leading up to the trade deadline ? and also into this off-season ? Amaro Jr. is facing his biggest challenge.
