SALT LAKE CITY ? Josh Watkins hit a 15-foot jumper with 3.3 seconds left to give Utah a 62-60 overtime victory over Washington State Thursday night at the Huntsman Center.
Watkins scored a game-high 20 points and also had seven rebounds and six assists for Utah, which evened its Pac-12 record at 1-1 and improved to 4-10 on the season.
After Watkins' shot in the lane, the Cougars' DeVonte Lacy lost the ball at midcourt with 1.5 seconds left.
The Utes were coming off the 40-point shellacking at Colorado five days earlier, but played much better in shooting 47.3 percent from the field and matching the Cougars in rebounding 33-33.
The Utes had no answer for WSU forward Brock Motum, who scored 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds.
Utah battled back from a late seven-point deficit to force overtime. Watkins hit a 12-footer in the lane with 17 seconds left to tie the game at 54 and at the other end, Reggie Moore missed a 18-footer with two seconds left.
The Utes led the Cougars 29-23 at halftime, thanks to 50 percent field-goal shooting. Motum scored the first nine points of the game for the Cougars, who took an early 14-12 lead.
However, after back-to-back baskets by Dijon Farr, and a 20-footer by Kareem Storey, the Utes led for the rest of the half. However, the Cougars came out strong in the second half and quickly went ahead 42-36
The lead got as high as seven before the Utes came back. Chris Hines and Cedric Martin hit back-to-back 3-pointers to bring the Utes within two at 54-52 before Watkins hit the tying basket.
